Position: Senior Grant Writer
Reports to: Chief Strategy & Integration Officer
Collaborates with: Manager of Development and Special Events, Executive Cabinet, Integration and Education Coordinator, Program Teams, Finance Team, Data Team
Primary Location: New York, NY 10010 (Hybrid work schedule)
Salary Range: $90,000 - $95,000; annual discretionary performance bonus
Position Overview
A leading non-profit is seeking a strategic and mission-driven Senior Grant Writer to join its Development Team. Reporting to the Chief Strategy & Integration Officer, the Senior Grant Writer will work closely with the Manager of Development and Special Events to develop and implement effective grant strategies that support our mission and growth. This role will manage the entire grant development lifecycle—from prospect research to submission and reporting. The Senior Grant Writer will collaborate with program, finance, and data teams to create compelling narratives, detailed budgets, and measurable outcomes that reflect the organization’s goals and values.
Note: The Senior Grant Writer is expected to be in the office at least two days per week and is encouraged to visit program sites in the Bronx at least once a week to stay connected with the community and program impact.
Key Responsibilities
Grant Writing and Submission Management:
- Lead the full process of grant proposals, including research, writing, editing, and submission.
- Develop compelling narratives and detailed applications that align program needs with funder priorities, clearly articulating objectives, budgets, and anticipated outcomes.
- Work with program, finance, and data teams to generate comprehensive budgets and proposal content, ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
- Carefully follow all grant application guidelines and requirements.
- Manage the grant calendar with the Manager of Development and Special Events, ensuring timely submissions and reporting.
Prospect Research and Donor Engagement:
- Conduct research to identify and pursue new funding opportunities aligned with our strategic goals.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with foundation and corporate donors, providing updates on the impact of their support.
- Partner with the Manager of Development to develop strategies for donor stewardship and engagement.
- Follow up post-submission to maintain positive relations with funders.
Collaboration and Data Management:
- Collaborate with program teams to gather relevant information to ensure proposals accurately reflect our objectives.
- Work with finance and data teams to create clear budgets and track outcomes in line with funder guidelines.
- Maintain a well-organized database of all grant submissions, tracking dates, outcomes, and feedback for improved efficiency.
- Manage the reporting processes for all awarded grants, ensuring adherence to grant terms and conditions.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, English, business administration, or a related field preferred.
- Relevant grant writing courses or workshops are a plus. Extensive experience in grant writing can substitute for formal education.
Experience:
- 5 to 7 years of experience in grant writing, with a proven record of securing significant grants from foundations, government agencies, and corporations.
- Previous experience managing a grant submission calendar and ensuring timely submissions.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth prospect research and align funding opportunities with organizational objectives.
- Proven experience in developing persuasive grant proposals and reports, focusing on program needs, budgets, and measurable outcomes.
- Strong experience in building relationships with funders and ensuring compliance with grant terms.
Soft Skills:
- Exceptional writing, storytelling, and communication skills to create persuasive and impactful narratives that align with the organization's values.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with teams.
- Familiarity with industry standards in grant writing and nonprofit funding trends to improve strategy and outreach.
