Assistant Teaching Professor, Game & Animation Media, J+M

The FIU College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) provides students with the distinct experience of working closely with an award-winning faculty in nationally ranked accredited programs in the heart of Miami, North Miami, and Miami Beach — three of the country’s most vibrant, diverse, and creative cities. CARTA emphasizes experiential learning, where students learn by doing through art and design studios, performances and productions, a student-run communication agency, and student news bureaus in Miami, Wynwood and Washington DC.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media in the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) at Florida International University seeks applicants for a non-tenure-earning Assistant Teaching Professor in Games and Animation Media beginning in August 2025. This is a full-time, nine-month, multi-year, non-tenure-earning assistant teaching professor position (initial appointment of three years, renewable upon mutual consent). Salary will be commensurate with experience.

The School’s teaching philosophy is to educate through immersive learning opportunities. We are seeking an experienced and energetic professional to teach our students industry standard production tools and techniques. Central to this position is guiding students through the process of releasing their own games, animated films, and multimedia projects. In addition to the primary teaching responsibilities, the new Assistant Teaching Professor will be expected to engage in creative work, mentor students, develop new courses, serve on university committees, and foster partnerships with external professional and creative organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

This position requires a terminal degree (MFA) or a master’s degree (MA or MS) in game design, animation, or a closely related field. Current experience and excellence in teaching in an academic environment are preferred.

Candidates with expertise in all areas of game design, development, VFX, or animation are encouraged to apply. Strong applicants will have expertise in one or more of the following:

  1. Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro, in particular)
  2. Adobe Substance 3D
  3. Autodesk Maya
  4. Arnold RenderView for Maya
  5. Unity
  6. C# scripting in Unity
  7. Unreal Engine
  8. VR/AR/XR

We welcome candidates from non-linear, interdisciplinary professional backgrounds. Fluency in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole is a plus.
