About The Position

The Greenlining Institute seeks a courageous, strategic, collaborative and visionary leader in the role of Vice President of Development and Communications to build on its legacy of advancing economic opportunity and empowering people of color; ensure consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives; and position the organization for strategic growth while embodying an unrelenting focus on equity. This key leadership role shapes the funding and communications strategy for The Greenlining Institute including optimizing opportunities through grants, contracts, special events, donor engagement, communications, and digital media strategy. This role holds various external engagements and works with the board, funders, media, philanthropic partners and Greenlining leaders and staff.

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Strategic Direction and Oversight of Development and Communication for Greenlining

  1. In partnership with the President/CEO, holds primary responsibility for the strategic and operational activities of the Development and Communications Team.
  2. Serves as a key leadership team member in making strategic decisions affecting GLI.
  3. Personifies an executive presence, a dynamic professional style and the ability to inspire confidence to all levels of the organization and with all constituencies.
  4. Embodies GLI’s values and standards for conduct and ethics at all times.
  5. Genuinely promotes GLI’s culture of inclusion and champions our mission.
  6. Provides leadership, planning and delivery of division goals.
  7. Supports knowledge management, internal learning and succession planning.
  8. Establishes and implements the infrastructure needed to grow the division in all program areas.
  9. Ensures strong positive relationships are developed with other departments and stakeholders.
  10. Oversees and monitors compliance with relevant federal, state and local regulations.

Staff Leadership & Management over the Policy Division

  1. Directly supervises Sr. Director, Director, Senior Project Manager working in the division (supervision of union positions included).
  2. Fosters engagement and organizational commitment of staff by effectively leading, providing direction, setting goals, and communicating information to empower staff for optimal outcomes.
  3. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  4. Proactively aligns individual work plans with team level goals and organizational aims.
  5. Uses rigorous methods and systems to keep projects on track and achieve team goals.
  6. Cultivates growth in all core competency areas including Communication, Collaboration, Strategic Innovation, Technical Expertise, Adaptability and Accountability.
  7. Encourages professional development by promoting a growth mindset, providing stretch opportunities and coaching staff on career progression strategies.
  8. Support and maintain a diverse and inclusive workplace culture to attract, retain, and motivate an exceptional, high performing team.
  9. Provides leadership in applying and embedding a diversity, equity and inclusion framework to the workplace environment and experience.
  10. Support mentorship and supervision of Academy participants and provide support to team members working directly with Academy participants.
  11. Support staff alignment with organizational priorities and collaboration across teams.
  12. Carries out supervisory responsibilities while adhering to union collective bargaining agreement, Greenlining’s policies and applicable employment laws.

Fundraising and Financial Management

  1. Will work closely with the Board of Directors and support board members as they take on a more fiduciary roles and responsibilities.
  2. Support and partner with the President and board members on all major fundraising initiatives.
  3. Oversee research funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position GLI ahead of major racial equity, economic equity and funding changes or trends.
  4. Prepares and manages the Division’s budget to ensure organizational and programmatic needs are met while operating within legal and budget parameters.
  5. Maintain effective financial practices and stewardship of the organization’s resources.
  6. Support the implementation of annual fundraising plans and other revenue models to ensure long-term financial sustainability for the organization.
  7. Work to secure funding necessary to meet the Development and Communications Division’s budgetary needs.

Communications and Stakeholder Relations

  1. Broadly and strategically promotes public affairs and public relations for GLI and positions the activities of the division’s goals to ensure that the organization is consistently presented to relevant stakeholders.
  2. Guides the development of a coordinated communications strategy to effectively tell the story of Greenlining's work and incorporate strategic communications into our advocacy.
  3. Leverages communications to cultivate relationships with and galvanize The Greenlining Coalition - a diverse group of community-based organizations that have banded together around a common vision of social justice.
  4. Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with other allied community groups and organizations.
  5. Represent the programs, policy positions, and point of view of the organization to agencies, community partners, funders, and the general public via writing, speaking, conferences and other engagements.
  6. Develop strong relationships with existing funders and cultivate relationships with new supporters.
  7. Guide the promotion and amplification of GLI proposals and in-depth research papers using a data-informed approach.
  8. Prepares periodic reports outlining the finances, operational successes or challenges, and recommendations for accelerating GLI’s impact.

Qualifications

  1. 7-10 Years in similar executive level role with strong and significant track record of success in fundraising, development, and communications.
  2. Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s degree in a related field strongly preferred.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to Greenlining’s mission, vision, values and goals and an understanding of the intersectionality in Greenlining’s work, culture, and workplace.
  4. Demonstrated commitment and experience in advancing equity and inclusion for people of color.
  5. Deep experience and direct relevance expertise.
  6. Working knowledge of the local, regional and national landscape, including key stakeholders, data points and trends for the work done by Greenlining.
  7. Ability to facilitate outcomes-oriented meetings, retreat activities, and/or workshops.
  8. A consensus-builder with strong emotional intelligence to relate to, understand and lead a team.
  9. Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain people-centric engagement strategies.
  10. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to confidently speak and represent the organization in local, regional and national forums.
  11. Ability and willingness to travel, as needed, to meetings and conferences throughout the state and possibly other locations.
  12. Fiscal management and fundraising experience including experience cultivating relationships with funders and providing strategic input into grant proposal development.
  13. Ability to evaluate existing systems, and develop and implement improvements.
  14. Courageous, strategic, collaborative and visionary leadership while being accountable, approachable, effective and inspiring.
  15. Must be able to forge new relationships to build GLI's visibility, impact, and financial resources.
  16. Ability to build and motivate strong, efficient teams that exhibit high levels of trust and accountability.
  17. Ability to manage in a unionized environment including adherence, support and understanding of the collective bargaining agreement.

This position reports to the CEO and is classified as Salaried, Exempt (FLSA).

The scope of responsibilities is not limited to those listed above and may change as organizational needs evolve. Specific work plan goals are developed each year to inform performance targets.

Compensation And Benefits

Salary based on experience. Superb benefits including health, vision and dental insurance premiums covered at 100% for employee and dependents as well as Life and Long-Term Disability Insurance. We provide a 5% annual salary match that is immediately vested to your 401(k) retirement plan. Work-life balance is supported with a 35-hour work week and hybrid work schedules.
