GENERAL DUTIES
- Performs supervisory and/or complex technical functions in laboratories in support of coursework.
- Maintains, fabricates, modifies, and repairs equipment.
- Determines equipment requirements, prepares purchase specifications, and coordinates acquisitions.
- Trains and supervises College Laboratory Technicians, College Assistants, and other laboratory staff.
- Manages set up, maintenance, and organization of student laboratories.
- Maintains safety and hygiene standards.
- Documents laboratory activities.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Department of Film and Media Studies at Hunter College (CUNY) seeks a College Lab Technician for Equipment Purchasing, Circulation, and Training. The successful hire will have excellent knowledge of contemporary equipment for documentary, narrative, and other forms of moving image media, including cameras, lighting, audio, and grip equipment. They will be organized and adept at supervising staff, work-study students, and interns. They will enjoy mentoring students and be able to organize and provide support for production classes and faculty.
Responsibilities include:
- Organize and maintain approximately 600SF equipment inventory for Film and Media courses, valued at approximately $1.4 million.
- Create and maintain a system for equipment checkout by approximately 600 students per semester.
- Research and purchase new equipment in consultation with the Department Chair and production faculty. Stay abreast of new developments and trends in equipment for narrative, documentary, emerging media, and journalism.
- Budget for equipment is between $50,000 and $100,000 per year.
- Interface with various Hunter College budgeting and purchasing departments and processes to facilitate equipment purchase.
- Train faculty in the use of department equipment.
- Train students in the use of department equipment, which may include running workshops inside and outside of class time.
- Hire and supervise College Assistants and work-study students to assist with equipment checkout.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma with a minimum of eight years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate's degree may be substituted for two years' experience and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years' experience. This position may also require the ability to supervise others.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
BA. Experience with film and video production equipment. Experience teaching or training in the use of film, video, and audio recording equipment. Experience managing staff, preferred.
COMPENSATION
$70,501 - $75,929 depending on experience.
