About the Department
The Undergraduate Communications Design (UGComD) department seeks a new faculty member in ILLUSTRATION. The department offers a BFA in Communications Design with a concentration in either Graphic Design or Illustration (the cohorts typically run about 50/50). UGComD is one of the largest departments at Pratt and includes over 80 full-time and part-time faculty and around 500-600 majors.

Position Summary
The Undergraduate Communications Design department in the School of Design at Pratt Institute invites applications for a full time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor/Associate Professor rank to begin Fall 2025.

The ideal candidate is an inventive, experimental, tech-forward thinker and maker who values both the fundamentals of visual communication (illustration-forward) while also expanding the discipline to be more inclusive and community-minded. Once hired, the candidate will be expected to teach required integrated courses in the curriculum (studios and seminars) that include both graphic design and illustration students, as well as illustration-specific courses.

Examples of Duties

  • Teach a range of existing required courses at the Sophomore, Junior and Senior level.
  • Demonstrate and maintain a substantial creative practice and research within your field of specialization or maintain an active and recognized professional practice, research/scholarship and/or creative activity.
  • Participate in curriculum development and assessment of student learning.
  • Participate in committee work and other services to the department, the school and Institute.
  • Embrace new forms of critically engaged practice and pedagogy.
  • Build interdisciplinary collaborations both inside and outside the School of Design.
  • Participate in the life of the school.

Qualifications
Required

  • An MFA or MDes or degree equivalent in VISUAL COMMUNICATION, COMMUNICATION DESIGN, ILLUSTRATION or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching with a minimum of 2 years experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • A record of professional practice and/or creative research in ILLUSTRATION.
  • A strong commitment to expanding beyond traditional illustration practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with diverse populations.
Preferred
  • Engagement with critical issues around making and working with contemporary tools/technologies.
  • Additional expertise in areas such as scripting in programming languages, digital collage, experience design, interaction design, generative systems, time-based media, 3D modeling, and data visualization.
  • Evidence of work outside the classroom engaging with various communities, promoting social justice, and fostering inclusivity.
