The Egan Library, University of Alaska Southeast, is seeking a part-time reference librarian to cover evening and weekend desk shifts. This position provides reference services and specialized research guidance for student, faculty, staff, and public users of an academic library, utilizing online databases, the Internet, the Alaska Library Catalog, and print resources. Temporary Reference Librarians also participate in collection development (evaluation and assessment of current collections and potential additions) and development of print and online instruction materials (such as library research guides). Under the supervision of the Information Literacy Librarian, Temporary Reference Librarians play an important role in maintaining full services during hours of operations. Professional training and development opportunities will be provided as needed. The Temporary Reference Librarian is dedicated to fostering a safe, supportive, and open environment at the University of Alaska Southeast. Candidates should understand the principles and practices of the library profession and have a working knowledge of research methods and tools including knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn and effectively use, Egan Library’s catalog and research databases. Candidates should have basic computer skills (Google Workspace, MS Office), be able and willing to quickly learn new technologies and software, and be able to teach library users of varying skill levels to effectively use library technology. Candidates must have excellent customer service skills, be reliable and able to work independently, and be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Experience providing reference in an academic setting is preferred along with a background working with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Master’s degree (ALA accredited MLS or MLIS) in library/information studies is required; OR a Bachelor’s degree with four years of relevant work experience in a library or similar setting, working directly with patrons and demonstrating knowledge of library print and database resources, library service provisions, and technology troubleshooting abilities. Candidates with a combination of education and experience will be considered.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska campus in Juneau. This is a part-time, non-exempt, temporary staff position. New hires will be placed on the UA Temporary Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 78, based on education and experience.
