Under supervision, the 3630 Librarian I performs beginning level professional librarian work. Responsibilities include:
- Explaining and carrying out assigned duties within established methods and procedures.
- Making regular contacts with the public, outside organizations, and library personnel.
- Maintaining awareness of current reading trends and literature.
The essential functions of this class include but are not limited to:
- Assist patrons in locating and using library facilities, equipment, technology, and materials, and answer a variety of questions.
- Recommend library materials for purchase, repair, or weeding.
- Perform reference work, research, and readers advisory; prepare bibliographies and book lists.
- Plan and conduct outreach programs and collaborate with community groups.
- Catalog and classify library material; create metadata; adapt cataloging records.
- Participate in maintaining a welcoming and safe atmosphere.
- Support digital content management and participate in digitization projects.
- May participate in committees to enhance library services.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: Modern library methods, procedures, and the role of a public library in the community.
Ability and Skill to: Work effectively with library patrons; evaluate library materials; educate patrons in using library facilities.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualification:
Education: Possession of a Master’s Degree in library and information studies from an ALA-accredited program.
Note: Qualifying education must be verified by a legible copy of diploma or transcripts.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- Fluency in languages depending on department needs.
- Graduate level coursework or experience in Children’s or Youth Services Librarian duties.
- Graduate level coursework or experience in Archivist Librarian duties.
- Graduate level coursework or cataloging experience using AACR2R and MARC format.
- College level coursework in special education or experience working with individuals with learning disabilities.
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
