The Westwood Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, community-focused leader to serve as our Library Director. The Westwood Free Public Library’s mission is to connect citizens with the resources, programs, and people to support an informed, educated, literate, engaged, and skilled community.
ABOUT OUR LIBRARY
The Westwood Public Library serves a diverse population of more than 11,000 residents in Bergen County, New Jersey, with the majority of residents owning library cards. As a vibrant community center in a town known as “the Hub of the Pascack Valley,” we offer a range of resources and programs year-round, catering to the evolving educational, informational, and recreational needs of our community.
JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Board of Trustees, the Library Director is responsible for all library operations and collection management while developing and implementing its service programs. The Director performs a wide array of leadership responsibilities requiring independent knowledge and sound judgment. The Library Director has ultimate responsibility for hiring and supervising all employees, as well as volunteers, who work for the Library.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Master of Library Science Degree from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited Library School
- New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate or eligibility for acquiring one
- Professional Library experience
- Three or more years in high-level supervisory and administrative positions
- New Jersey resident with a valid driver's license
- Proficient in Google Workspace
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee operation and maintenance of the library
- Recruit, supervise, and facilitate professional development of staff
- Prepare and implement annual budget and present it to the Mayor and Borough Council
- Create programming, curate collections, and provide reference materials
- Develop strategic planning for the future
- Foster cooperative relationships between schools, municipality, and other agencies within Westwood
- Participate in local, state, and national professional organizations
- Actively seek and apply for outside grants and other sources of funding
- Ability to readjust the physical space of the library to accommodate programming

- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and team-building skills
- Working knowledge of professional library practices, trends, and technologies
- Demonstrated knowledge of budgeting and financial management practices
- Motivate staff, encourage professional growth, and cultivate positive working relationships
- Commitment to excellent customer service and community engagement
- Capacity to work effectively with people of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and abilities
- Strong written and verbal skills, including public speaking
