POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Library Services plays a crucial role at Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine by assisting faculty, staff, and students in finding and accessing information resources, including books, academic journals, databases, and digital materials. The Director is responsible for developing and maintaining library collections specific to medical education, carefully selecting and acquiring new materials that align with the institution's needs and research focus areas. The Director provides instruction on information literacy and research methodologies, assisting patrons with how to effectively search and evaluate information. The Director supports research projects and curriculum development, where appropriate. The Director also manages and organizes digital resources, creates research guides, and may be involved in data management and preservation of scholarly works.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implements the vision with leadership for Noorda-COM Michael D. Elton Library
- Reports to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.
- Develops and communicates a strategic vision for library services aligned with the evolving needs of osteopathic medicine.
- Oversees the collection development process for Noorda-COM Libraries, formulating policies to create an objective collection development policy for library collections.
- Proactively pursues grant and external funding opportunities in advocacy for the library and Noorda-COM community.
- Is knowledgeable of and remains in compliance with all institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook for Noorda-COM College.
- Responds to inquiries regarding library resources related to college policies and procedures requiring interpretation from the perspective of the library.
- Budget Management:
Develops departmental budget recommendations in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Responsible for fiscal accountability for prudent management of financial resources, ensuring adherence to college practices. Monitors and reconciles monthly expenses.
- Oversees the life cycle of physical and electronic resources within the library: orders, processes, catalogs, maintains physical stacks and electronic holdings.
- Establishes, documents, and updates procedures relating to technical services.
- Ensures the integrity of the library’s database of bibliographic records by performing regular maintenance on bibliographic records to improve accuracy.
- Gathers and maintains a usage statistics repository for all electronic resources where available.
- Oversees personnel recordkeeping, monitoring activities, and directing the updating of files.
- Leads and builds a strong, team-oriented staff for Library Services.
- Provides leadership and mentoring of direct report, Technical Services Librarian.
- Fosters a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and continuous improvement within the library and across the Noorda-COM community.
- Develops programming opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
- Develops and delivers content in Information Literacy, Evidence-based practice, critical appraisal, and information integrity within the curriculum.
- As needed, provides assistance for literature search services.
- Works with faculty, students, researchers, and others to conduct systematic reviews and synthesis of evidence.
- Presents on a variety of research topics at various conferences.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certification:
- Required: A master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program.
- Preferred qualifications: Academic library experience, collections assembly experience, AHIP certification, grant-writing experience.
Skills & Abilities:
- Highly professional with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to institute a comfortable learning environment necessary to maintain a dynamic curriculum.
