Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History What began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores, post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.

What you will do at Harris County Public Library:

This position is responsible for developing programs for an adult audience. Provide customer service, reader’s advisory, and basic reference service. Leads Adult Literacy program and services focused on citizenship readiness, English as a second language, and adult basic education. Exemplify the high standards and expectations for the library system in its daily operations and services.

This position is at the Lone Star College (LSC) - Tomball Campus. The LSC-Tomball Community Library is a joint library partnership between the LSC-Tomball Campus and the Harris County Public Library (HCPL) to serve both the academic and public communities. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plans, coordinates, and promotes adult services and programs focused on citizenship readiness, English as a second language, adult basic education, summer reading, and other special events
  • Identifies literacy needs of library service areas in cooperation with branch staff and Program, Partnerships, and Outreach Division
  • Provides literacy programs and services focused on citizenship readiness, English as a second language, and adult basic education
  • Supports, encourages and empowers adult literacy-focused team members throughout the library service areas by providing guidelines, resources, and partnership connections
  • Provides customer service, reader’s advisory, and basic reference service within and beyond our walls
  • Promotes library services to adults and the community
  • Provides individualized technical assistance to library users
  • Collaborates with the branch team to develop, implement, and market programs in the library and community
  • Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with local/community organizations
  • Develops an engaging and attractive library collection
  • Attends staff meetings, activities, and/or professional conferences and actively serves on committees
  • Other duties as assigned

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • One (1) year of program experience (e.g., activities for adults) 
  • One (1) year of customer service experience 
OR
  • Associate degree in any field or 60 hours of secondary education credits from an accredited college or university 
  • Three (3) years of program experience (e.g., activities for adults) 
  • One (1) year of customer service experience 
OR
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Five (5) years of program experience (e.g., activities for adults) 
  • One (1) year of customer service experience 
Additional Requirements:
  • Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties 
  • Unofficial copies of transcripts are required along with the application
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Proficient with Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
  • Proficient with the Internet and Office 365
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment
  • Ability to work well with public and staff members
  • Ability to exercise initiative and act with discretion

  • 19.53 Per Hour
  • Paid Biweekly
Work Environment and Physical Demands: 
  • This job typically operates in a professional office environment with overhead lighting and long periods of screen time.
  • Daily use of a computer, keyboard, copier, scanner, printer, calculator, phone (desk and cell).
  • Daily use of software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Word, Excel, and GPS.
  • At times, work may be performed in an outdoor environment and may have possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes.
  • Driving: Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties. 
  • Sitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and exert up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lifts, carries, and exerts up to 40 pounds.
