Description:
Coordinates the daily operations of a library function or program such as serial ordering, reference processing, special collections, electronic publications, information services, and so forth.
- Performs reference work using subject expertise or general resource material.
- Trains and coordinates the work activities of library specialists, library assistants, and/or student workers.
- Interprets and teaches use of basic indexes, directories, guides, files, and catalogs.
- Receives and processes reserves and library loan requests.
- Compiles book lists and bibliographies; reviews books and other material in areas of subject expertise.
- Participates in the preparation, maintenance, and updating of policies and procedures for functional area.
- May teach electronic research classes to new and experienced library users.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Requires the ability and knowledge for analysis and interpretation of procedures, policies, and practices attainable through specific education and/or training programs in a specialty or technical field. Advanced vocational or electronic skills or a basic knowledge of a professional field is required. An Associate's degree or certification/licensing in a technical specialty program of over 18 months and up to 3 years duration are characteristic of this field. Requires a minimum of one (1) year of directly job-related experience. Department is willing to accept education in lieu of experience and experience in lieu of education.

The Senior Library Specialist (Copy Cataloger) describes, classifies, and processes library resources in accordance with professional standards and UH Libraries policies, all in service to the organization’s values and strategic plan. This position works within the Resource Description unit of RMM to maintain locally edited bibliographic data in our shared cataloging environment with participating UH System Libraries. The ability to learn and implement new technologies with a high level of attention to detail is essential to success in this position.
Duties Specific to This Position:
- Copy catalog MARC bibliographic records and update local holdings records for books and music resources.
- Work collaboratively with Resource Description staff to copy catalog newly purchased materials and gift items, and assist in correcting issues with local catalog records.
- Participate in training, professional development, project tracking, and reporting of cataloging statistics.
- Stay up to date with changes in cataloging standards, best practices, and ongoing trends across the profession.
Required Qualifications Specific to This Position:
- 1 year of experience working in a library technical services department (acquisitions, cataloging, interlibrary loan, processing, etc.).
- 1 year of experience with transcription, copy editing, or data entry.
- Comfort with learning and using new technology.
Preferred Qualifications Specific to This Position:
- Experience using an integrated library system (ILS), such as Ex Libris Alma, Voyager, etc.
- Knowledge of MARC records and fields.
- Knowledge of cataloging rules such as Anglo-American Cataloging Rules 2nd ed. (AACR2), Resource Description and Access (RDA), etc.
- Ability to read notated music, knowledge of rudimentary music theory (key signatures, scales/chords, time signatures, etc.), and familiarity with musical instruments families (winds, strings, percussion, etc.) and vocal ranges.
