Daniela Schlingmann Literary Scouting: Scout or Senior Scout

We are a friendly and nurturing team looking for an energetic and hard-working Scout to join our adult scouting team.

The company
Daniela Schlingmann Literary Scouting Ltd. works with a host of outstanding international publishers around the world and several British film and TV clients to find the very best fiction, non-fiction and children's books from the UK and the US to be published in translation and be adapted for film and TV.

Job title
Scout or Senior Scout (Adult)

The role
We are looking for an energetic and hard-working Scout to join our adult scouting team. They will find key titles from the UK, the US and international markets and report on them to our international publisher clients, and our film and TV clients. Key responsibilities will include expanding their existing network of industry contacts, pulling in new projects, and building strong relationships with our clients and communicating with them on a daily basis, particularly around the major book fairs. This role has a special focus on the US market and commercial non-fiction, so an interest in and experience of US fiction and non-fiction is particularly beneficial, as is a broad network of relevant industry contacts. Some liaising with US contacts may be required outside of regular work hours.

The ideal candidate
Scouting is exciting, varied and very fast paced, so we are looking for candidates who are highly organised and diligent, and able to remain cool-headed in a busy working environment. They should show good judgement, communicate well, and enjoy working as part of a team. Candidates will have at least 4 years' experience of full-time employment in the publishing industry, and could come from a scouting, rights, or editorial background. They will have an existing network of relevant contacts, good knowledge of foreign markets, and read broadly across fiction and non-fiction, especially from the US market. They will be a fast and precise reader and be able to report confidently and clearly on the content, style, and commercial value of books. The ability to speak any European languages is very welcome, as is multi-national citizenship.

Responsibilities and duties
• Pulling in, prioritising, reading submissions and writing reports to tight deadlines.
• Expanding and nurturing a network of industry contacts in the US, UK and other markets and liaising with them to obtain information about key titles.
• Forging strong relationships with clients and understanding their markets. Liaising with them regularly to answer queries and support them during acquisitions.
• Preparing for and attending Frankfurt and London book fairs. Representing DSLS at the fairs, and assisting clients with their schedules, as required.
• Undertaking other international travel, including client visits.
• Representing DSLS by attending industry events.
• Following industry news and social media to report on market developments and industry changes.

Position
Full-time, hybrid working.

We will consider applicants based in the UK or the US only. Candidates in the UK to be based within a commutable distance from our West London office as weekly attendance in the office and at meetings and industry events in central London is required. Candidates in the US to be based within reasonable distance of NYC, as taking regular meetings with publishers and agents is required.

Salary
Salary range starting at £35,000, depending on experience and skill set.
25 days' paid holiday per year (increasing up to 30 days per year over time), plus bank holidays.
Benefits include flexible working, pension scheme, rental deposit loan, season ticket loan, eye care voucher scheme, Cycle to Work voucher scheme, and an allowance for setting up a home-working station.
