The Sound Symphony is a unique and exciting orchestra in residency in Port Jefferson Station, NY. We present concerts throughout the entire year, performed by members of the community across Eastern Long Island.
Since our founding in 1984, we’ve offered a series of outstanding programs of both classical and contemporary composers. We seek to encourage talented young musicians with our family-friendly concert every January and solo competition every May. Whether professional music educators or hailing from non-musical professions, we all share a deep love of orchestral music.
Position Overview
The Music Director of the Sound Symphony is responsible for guiding and shaping the artistic direction of the organization. The Music Director reports directly to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the fulfillment of the orchestra’s artistic potential and its image in the community. The Director is responsible for the repertoire, programming, and artistic production of the orchestra and is expected to work closely with the General Manager, Personnel Manager, and the Board of Directors in carrying out these responsibilities.
Candidates that move past the initial application search will be expected to provide a video example of themselves conducting an ensemble and sample programming recommendations for typical classical performance, family-friendly performances, and outdoor summer performance featuring a variety of works, including selections for a vocal soloist. Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Exceptional musicianship and conducting skills
- Significant conducting experience, including work with professional musicians, student musicians, music educators, and community musicians
- Knowledge of a broad range of repertoire, including but not limited to classical, contemporary, Great American Songbook/jazz, Broadway, and film scores
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills
- Community development and outreach skills
- Vision, passion, and ability to make orchestral music relevant and exciting for audiences and performers.
Previous or current music directorship or comparable experience preferred.
