Saint Matthew Church (located in Livonia, New York) is seeking a Director of Music, including Organist/Pianist and Choir Director
Job Description: The Director of Music is a non-exempt part-time position and an essential part of the liturgical life of Saint Matthew Church. The Director of Music is directly accountable to the pastor. Duties and responsibilities can be summarized under the following categories.
Responsibilities
The Director of Music is responsible for providing liturgical music at all church service and functions requiring the same, and related functions (e.g., posting hymn numbers, providing hymn numbers for inclusion in the weekly bulletin). Typically, this includes a Sunday morning mass at 10:30AM and a Saturday anticipatory mass at 4:30PM. Also included are providing liturgical music for funerals, weddings, Holy Days of Obligation, Easter Triduum, and other special services as indicated.
Organist and Pianist
- While the organ traditionally has privilege of place in Catholic Church, the church has both piano and organ available. St. Matthew has a 2005 Allen 2-manual Renaissance Digital organ and a Petrov (Czechoslovakian) mid-size grand piano; both regularly used.
- The parish currently has a small adult choir that sings at the 10:30 Mass and rehearses prior to the mass in the sanctuary, starting at 9:30AM.
Folk Group
- The parish has a large folk group that leads the congregational singing at one Sunday and one Saturday mass each month. Other than occasional oversight, this group is on its own with its own director. That group currently has its own pianist.
Cantors and Instrumentalists
- The Director of Music and schedules cantors and occasional instrumentalists as the Director sees fit, and may serve as a cantor, particularly at Saturday liturgies. There are a number of excellent and helpful cantors available.
Administrative
- Attendance (where possible) at staff meetings.
Qualifications
- Solid understanding of the liturgy and the musical heritage of the church.
- Proficiency at (preferably) both piano and organ, and acquaintance with organ literature.
- Proficiency as a choral director for adults and children, and acquaintance with choral literature.
- Ability to sing and direct basic Gregorian chant.
Compensation/Logistics
- Compensation (hourly rate) is negotiable. In the past, it has been a base hourly rate that covers coordination responsibilities (cantors, choir music prep, Sunday morning rehearsal, procuring a substitute when unavailable, etc.) plus a per service compensation structureincluding any rehearsals beyond the listed Sunday rehearsal.
- The Music Director must act, at all times, in conformity with the personnel policies of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester.
- Planned start date is January 1, 2025, when the current Director will be leaving.
