About the Position
The NAU Kitt School of Music seeks a dynamic, creative, and dedicated conductor-educator to serve as a tenure-eligible Assistant Professor with an additional appointment as Director of Orchestras. Secondary teaching will be commensurate with department needs and candidate qualifications. The position requires positive mentorship for students from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels, who are pursuing a broad range of careers, including education, performance, and liberal arts.
Responsibilities Include:
- Direct the Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra.
- Conduct opera productions (typically one annually).
- Teach courses in conducting.
- Teach courses in a secondary area of expertise, such as string methods, secondary music education methods, or orchestral literature.
- Maintain a performing or research agenda at the national level.
- Committee and service assignments consistent with all faculty appointments.
This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at the Flagstaff Mountain campus with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
This is a 9-month academic year appointment with additional summer pay related to the administrative appointment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctorate in orchestral conducting or related field by the time of appointment; OR,
- Master's Degree in orchestral conducting or related field and three years of orchestral conducting experience in a post-secondary academic or professional setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive and varied conducting background.
- Experience in or established record of success in recruiting at the collegiate level.
- Demonstrated success in teaching and administrative leadership at the university/collegiate level.
- Record of, or evidence of potential for, excellence in scholarly/creative contributions to the profession.
- Demonstrated success in and/or commitment to inclusive excellence on campus and in the community.
- Experience teaching strings in public school or youth settings.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of current trends in pedagogy and performance in string/orchestral ensemble settings.
- Ability to rehearse and direct orchestra for opera production.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty in applied, ensemble, and academic areas in music.
- Ability to mentor and advise students from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels.
