Job Story

Assistant Professor of Viola/Violin and String Music Education: full-time, tenure track.
The faculty member will be a high-string specialist that can recruit and retain undergraduate and graduate violists, teach secondary violin, and support the String Pedagogy and Music Education programs. The academic appointment for this position will be effective August 4, 2025.

Job Summary

Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels using various instructional deliveries (e.g., traditional (face-to-face), hybrid, and fully online). To foster applied learning into the course design and engage with industry and local business community applied projects. To advance knowledge through scholarly activities (e.g., active involvement in committees, student mentorship, recruitment and retention initiative, outreach activities, etc.)

Essential Functions

Meet expectations for research, teaching, and service as set forth by the department and college.

Job Duties

Primary responsibilities include teaching applied viola lessons to undergraduate and graduate students, applied violin lessons to secondary and non-major students as needed, chamber music, and other courses related to string music education. The faculty member will be an avid recruiter and maintain an active creative/research agenda based upon their desires in accordance with the Uniscope model. Demonstration of a collaborative mind-set and exhibition of professional-level performance acumen is desired for the position, including diverse knowledge of string instrument technique, repertoire, and contemporary pedagogies.

Depending on qualifications, possibly teach other courses in the School of Music.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Terminal degree in direct field
  • Teaching experience

Faculty Requirements

Doctoral degree in Music conferred by the time of appointment

Required License/Certifications/Training:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to teach applied viola and violin.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct string pedagogy and techniques courses.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to accommodate a variety of learning styles and strategies in instructional delivery and learning activities, including online and blended learning, flexible teaching methods, and applied learning approaches.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated artist-level performance experience.
  • College/university level teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated success as a recruiter.
