Assistant News Director Job at Nexstar Media Group in Wilkes-Barre

The Assistant News Director assists the News Director with all aspects of news, weather, and sports programming production, and serves as the News Director in his/her absence.

Responsibilities:

1. Assist the News Director with management of all aspects of the News Department (other than Production).
2. Assist with planning, staffing, training, and performance evaluations for the News Department.
3. Consult on decisions regarding hiring, evaluations, promotions, and termination of employees.
4. Develop news coverage strategy for the station and its website.
5. Critique newscasts daily to correct errors, improve coverage, and provide mentoring feedback to news staff.
6. Assign projects to staff and verify that deadlines are being met.
7. Ensure achievement of viewer rating goals.
8. Determine programming and evaluation of equipment needs to produce quality programming.
9. Respond to coverage questions.
10. Serve as the News Director in his/her absence.
11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Skills:

1. Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
2. Fluency in English.
3. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
4. Minimum of two years' experience in a news leadership role.
5. Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
6. Ability to effectively listen and fully understand employee needs and communicate with a team to shape a solution.
