Labcorp is seeking an Associate Technical Director for HLA and Relationship Testing to join our DNA Identity team in Burlington, NC. This position will focus primarily on performing final review and release of cases for our parentage testing and HLA workflows, with the allocation of duties dependent on business needs. Opportunities for involvement with the SNP testing laboratory may be available for qualified candidates.

The Associate Technical Director will ensure scientific quality in the laboratory, assist operations with technical troubleshooting, and interact with employees at various levels. ASHI or AABB accredited, or board eligible laboratory directors are encouraged to apply. Individuals with other board certifications such as ABMGG or doctoral scientists with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.

Labcorp DNA Identity is a high-volume laboratory that provides identity and relationship testing for a variety of purposes including confirming parentage, immigration, and engraftment monitoring, performs HLA testing using a variety of methodologies including short-read and long-read NGS platforms, and SNP microarray testing for a variety of direct-to-consumer and clinical clients.

Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 1st Shift 8am-430pm (Flexible Start Time)

Job Responsibilities:

  • Review, interpret, and report genetic test results reliably, accurately, and with integrity
  • Sign out a high volume of paternity cases and/or HLA test results as needed
  • Effectively communicate with clients, clinicians, and various laboratory staff at all levels
  • Oversee the technical component of the laboratory to ensure that patient results are reported reliably and in a timely fashion
  • Ensure accuracy for all testing in the lab, including instrument performance and addressing root causes when issues arise
  • Guide implementation of new assays and instrumentation in the lab in collaboration with the research and development team
  • Oversee adherence to accepted technical procedures and policies and regulatory standards
  • Keep up with scientific advances and other literature, offering perspectives about improvements, such as how a report reads
  • Provide staff educational seminars, participate in national technical societies and publish peer-reviewed manuscripts
  • Set the tone in the lab for performance, quality, and leadership
  • Share experiences and ideas with discipline directors, such as improvements to SOPs and reports, interfaces with IT or additional support teams as needed
  • Work effectively with the Laboratory Director to deliver on the above responsibilities to meet service levels

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in the biological or physical sciences or MD degree
  • Board Certification from the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI) or eligibility to take the boards is preferred. Candidates with other boards or training may be considered with a showing of experience in genetic testing, relationship testing, human genetics or population genetics, immunology, or histocompatibility testing
  • A combination of experience with some of the following: Relationship testing, histocompatibility testing, STR (short tandem repeat) analysis, GeneMapper ID-X software, PCR, capillary electrophoresis, NGS, SNP microarray is preferred
  • Prior experience with genetics or immunology is preferred
  • Prior experience at a director level is preferred
  • Strong communication skills; both written and verbal
  • Leadership skills to work with lab staff, developing their capabilities and involving them in problem-solving/urgent matters
  • Deductive reasoning/analytical skills to reach a resolution to customer inquiries or lab opportunities/issues
  • Understanding of test validations, quality control and quality management; proficiency testing; and regulatory requirements for clinical genetic testing
  • Ability to respond to urgent situations in a timely manner
  • Ability to understand quality standards and be accountable for providing accurate results
