Job Overview:
A law firm is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mid-Level Product Design and User Interface Patent Agent to join its dynamic team in Salt Lake City. This position is ideal for an individual with a strong academic background, significant law firm and industry experience, and exceptional communication and writing skills. The ideal candidate will have experience in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in cutting-edge technologies such as software, artificial intelligence, networking, and quantum technologies. The candidate must have a JD and be admitted to the USPTO.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare and prosecute patent applications related to product design, user interface, and emerging technologies.
- Conduct patentability assessments and legal research to support clients in protecting intellectual property (IP).
- Collaborate with inventors, engineers, and product designers to draft high-quality patent applications.
- Advise clients on patent strategies, including portfolio management and prosecution techniques.
- Review and analyze patent office actions and prepare responses promptly.
- Work with clients to understand their business objectives and ensure patent filings align with those goals.
- Stay informed of the latest technological developments in relevant industries, including software, artificial intelligence, IOT, and quantum technologies.
- Participate in IP due diligence related to mergers, acquisitions, and licensing agreements.
- Support litigation efforts by preparing relevant documentation and technical expertise when required.
- Engage in business development activities to foster relationships with clients and expand the firm's patent practice.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 2+ years of relevant patent preparation and prosecution experience in a law firm or corporate environment.
- Proven expertise in preparing and prosecuting patent applications in at least one of the following areas: software, artificial intelligence, IOT, networking, or quantum technologies.
- Exceptional legal research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with clients and colleagues.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in collaborating with cross-functional teams including engineers, product managers, and IP specialists.
Education and Certifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
Preferred Experience:
- Patent prosecution experience in software, artificial intelligence, IOT, networking, and quantum technologies.
- Experience with international patent filings and prosecution.
- Exposure to patent portfolio management and IP strategy development.
Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of U.S. and international patent laws.
- Technical expertise in product design, user interface, and emerging technologies.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to a non-technical audience.
