HRT is seeking an energetic, motivated, and team-oriented individual to provide premium web content development and programming services to enterprise-level clients in mission-critical web communications utilizing a wide range of web-based software products. The main responsibilities of the Sr. Web Developer will be the primary designer and developer of all HRT websites and mentorship and guidance of junior web developers. The ideal candidate has a passion for building maintainable and scalable applications, solving problems, and delighting customers and business partners.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Work experience as a Full Stack Developer.
  • Work with technology teams, and internal agency departments, to plan, create, develop, and maintain, both new and existing, web-based systems and websites.
  • Responsible for full website lifecycle of requirements gathering, design, documenting, implementation, testing and release to production of all HRT websites and web projects including webforms and web applications.
  • Develop/Create and maintain webpages that are consistent with HRT’s online strategy, branding and marketing pieces and mentor junior web developers with compliance to these standards.
  • Work with Security team to develop and implement website security protocol.
  • Monitor website traffic and propose and implement suggestions to increase traffic.
  • Monitor website API pay-per-click usage, and implement alternate solutions, if not feasible.
  • Stay up to date on web development technologies and best practices and be able to make recommendations for use on the HRT websites.
  • Develop scalable and maintainable web applications. Applications may include user interfaces, integrations with third party web services and new or existing databases.
  • Develop functional prototypes and beta web applications quickly to support proof of concepts for HRT.
  • Support existing web applications including troubleshooting, bug fixing, required upgrades and modifications to existing functionality.
  • Work with business partners to define/clarify project requirements and acceptance criteria, define success metrics for features to be delivered.
  • Work with Technology staff and other departments to plan, develop and test new web architecture, content, and functionality before migration to production.
  • Mentor and train junior web developers.
  • Break down larger projects into small, repeatable components, with documentation of best practices and templates, to assist with training of junior web developers.
  • Manage all work requests within a helpdesk tracking system.
  • Performing full web development life cycle including requirements gathering, documentation, programming, testing, and releasing to production of all existing and new HRT websites and departmental webforms and web applications per industry best practices.
  • Work closely with DBAs to ensure website data redundancy is being met.
  • Create and document web coding standards to be used at HRT.
  • Create and manage the website source control repository.
  • Ensuring HRT websites meet the agency's security protocol.
  • Coach junior web developers in design reviews and code reviews to follow industry best practices and conform with HRT web coding standards and branding.
  • Participate and mentor junior developers in the agile development process.
  • Manage records created and received in compliance with the Hampton Roads Transit Records Management Policies and Procedures.

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills essential to Job Functions:

  • At least eight years of experience performing full website development life cycle implementation including; requirements gathering, documentation, programming, testing, and releasing to production of websites, webforms, web applications, CRM, and e-commerce websites, per industry best practices.
  • Experience mentoring junior web developers on website creation best practices and provide documentation of best practices to facilitate junior website development training.
  • Knowledge and compliance of security best practices and protocol for all HRT websites.
  • Manage the web source code repository and adhere to industry standard best practice deployment processes.
  • Demonstrated expert level creativity in solving layout and technical challenges.
  • Demonstrated experience in real-time, interactive development methodologies and tools preferred.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills at both technical and end-user levels to provide customer-oriented assistance in a professional manner.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Self-starter with strong self-management skills, the ability to work in a team environment, and provide mentorship to junior web developers.

Training and/or Education:

BS in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, or similar experience required.

Required Experience:

Eight years or more of demonstrated experience with full website lifecycle designing, developing, and programming of high quality, customer-facing, websites and web applications.

Licenses or Certificates:

Possess a valid Driver's License. Acquire a Virginia Driver's License within 60 days after the date of hire (in instances when an out of state license is not the applicant's current state of residence).
