Job Description Summary:
The Medical Writer will provide medical writing support to select faculty and staff and assist with the development of ideas and clinical topics related to medicine research for grants, publications, and presentations. Tasks include retrieving and summarizing data and information from literature searches and research studies; assisting faculty with the preparation of grants, manuscripts, and all other scientific presentation materials (e.g., presentations, posters, abstracts); as well as the development and implementation of scientific and grant writing training for faculty, residents and staff.

This position will be responsible for collaborating with all levels of faculty and researchers to develop, edit, and complete scientific communications (manuscripts, grants, SOPs, presentations and other medical scientific writings). The position will report to the Director of the Center for Survivorship and Patient-Oriented Research

Job Description:

This position will work onsite at our Westwood Office and may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule after 6 months based on management approval and department schedule.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in a scientific or health care field

Work Experience:
  • 5 years of related experience in scientific area involving publication, grant or clinical trial writing
  • Experience in using computer-based tools (Microsoft Office, Adobe applications, webpage design tools etc.)
  • Expertise with office and writing software (Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, EndNote).


Preferred Qualifications

Education: Advanced degree in a life science (MS, PhD, or equivalent), or related to cancer; two years of progressively more responsible scientific and/or writing/editorial experience.

Work Experience:
  • Understanding of scientific funding mechanisms and grant application processes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of requirements for writing and reporting clinical trials and other clinical research formats
  • Experience with grant application formats
  • Understanding of statistics and research design

Skills:
  • Excellent Oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Effective communicator with excellent written and verbal communication skills as evidenced in application materials, examples of writings, and interview process.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic graphics skills (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Visio, BioRender, InDesign).


Job Duties Outlined:
  • Responsible for writing, drafting and submitting a variety of scientific materials for grants and peer reviewed journals.
  • Prepares figures and illustrations for publications.
  • Assists in communications between authors and publishers.
  • Develops power point and web-based presentation of data for lay audiences.
  • Edits and proofreads articles, book chapters, grants, abstracts, posters, oral and visual presentations for style and content.
  • Contributes to development of institutional grant proposals and multi-project grant applications by participating as a member of researcher teams.
  • Maintains high standards for written work, with the goal to produce top-quality products that meet or exceed the guidelines and objectives of funding.agencies.
  • Provides detailed copy editing of written narratives, with strong attention to grammar, formatting, and style.
  • Develops and maintains an awareness of KUSOM strategic goals and accomplishments.
  • Conducts review of medical literature and summarizes findings.
  • Responsible for organizing, prioritizing, and meeting multiple deadlines for internal customers and publishers.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
