Job Description

Nevada State University invites applications for the position of Student Worker - Writing Specialist. The student worker will meet with writers in-person and online, supporting writing at any stage in the process. In addition, this position will take an active role in co-creating center resources, training, workshops, data collection, advertising, and recruitment. We trust each specialist to take initiative and handle projects at their own pace. As a member of the Writing Center team, the student worker will join the vibrant field of Writing Studies and receive training in tutoring strategies. The Writing Center welcomes applicants from every major on campus. Undergraduate and graduate students are both eligible to apply.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Support writers, both in-person and online.
  • Receive training in useful topics, such as universal design, revision strategies, antiracist tutoring, and writing in specific disciplines.
  • Contribute to the Writing Center’s resources, practices, and community.
  • Provide course-embedded support for composition courses.
  • Lead writing workshops and all-campus events.
  • Collaborate on the Long Night Against Procrastination (LNAP) each semester.

Further Opportunities:

  • Conduct research and present at professional conferences (past topics include Queer Identity, linguistic diversity, graphic novels as a training tool, neurodivergent tutor perspectives, and more).
  • Receive training to support additional genres, including speeches, writing for standardized tests, and writing in the sciences.
  • Learn about center management based on personal interests.
  • Potential opportunities include advertising, website design, cross-campus collaboration, event planning, and discipline-specific writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 12 credit hours completed, and at least 6 of them at Nevada State University.
  • Completed ENG 102 by the time you begin working in the Center.
  • Have at least two full semesters remaining in your college career when your work begins.
  • Enthusiasm for assisting others and for the writing process.
  • Must be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current or upcoming semester at Nevada State.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in writing for diverse audiences, purposes, and genres.
  • Openness to new ideas about writing, reading, tutoring, and learning.
  • Interest in a range of disciplines and forms of writing.
  • The ability to communicate in multiple languages or enthusiasm for working in a multilingual environment.

Work Hours:

Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week. You will be expected to work between 10 and 19.5 hours per week, with flexible hours.

Hourly Rate:

$15.00 per hour.
