Position description
The Department of Surgery at the University of California, Davis invites applications for multiple qualified Junior Specialists for grant writing and research support. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on basic science research. The successful candidates will also plan, prepare, organize, write, edit, and provide grant development support. The individual will be involved in the following activities: Assist in preparing a range of grant proposals that could be small (1 year) to larger (3+ years) more complex interdisciplinary grants; compile, write and edit grant applications; edit draft applications for data accuracy, scientific clarity and logic, and visual design; write or rewrite and organize scientific manuscripts for publications in peer-reviewed literature including the review of syntax, logical organization and grammar; verify that manuscripts meet editorial standard requirements of each journal.
General responsibilities may include:
RESEARCH (70%):
*Prepare grant proposals
*Maintain and update investigators files
*Monitor progress of proposal for content accuracy and timely submissions
*Read and provide essential writing & editing support on all documents in response to Request for Proposals (RFPs) and Request for Applications (RFAs)
*Collaborate, plan & design proposal outline
*Facilitate document preparation, assemble written technical content contributions from proponents, obtain supporting documents & forms, and upload into sponsor portals
*Maintain consistency throughout process
*Evaluate, guide, coordinate and manage editorial changes of multiple writers/reviewers and provide technical advice
*Edit draft applications for accuracy, scientific clarity and logic and visual design for effective communication to meet grant requirements
*Independently rewrite and reorganize scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed literature. Review syntax, logical organization and grammar
*Verify accuracy of tables, graphs, illustrations and charts within manuscripts
*Evaluate manuscript for value of content, logic and validity of conclusions in regard to submission to specific journals
*Assist with overall strategy of presenting data and communication main message of the author's research findings
*Verify manuscripts meet editorial standard requirements of each journal
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE (20%):
*Participation in surgery and bioengineering conferences and professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations
*Review of journal manuscripts and other publications related to surgery and bioengineering research
*Additional education and credentials as related to surgery and bioengineering research
UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10%):
*Committee service for lab safety, animal care, facilities, and mentorship of volunteer students
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
*The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and an interest in basic science; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 2 positions
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Appointments may be made up to 100% time, benefits included based on appointment percentage. Duration: 1-2 years. On call and weekend work may be required but will be scheduled ahead of time.
