The Position

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Circulations Supervisor, the Senior Library Generalist performs a variety of library duties including but not limited to checking in and out library materials, assessing and collecting fines and fees, answering informational and directional questions, and generally assisting patrons with applications, book reservations and the like; interviewing, training and overseeing the work of adult volunteers; and supervising circulation activities and the work of the Library Generalists in the absence of the Circulation Supervisor.
  • Leader of the Circulation division in the absence of the Assistant Library Director and Circulation Supervisors;
  • Participates in the hiring, training and evaluating of the Library Generalists and Library Aides;
  • Assists with daily desk schedules and monthly work calendars for Library Generalists and Aides;
  • Works at circulation desk, checks in and out Library materials; issues library cards, and collects payments;
  • Assesses and collects fines and fees for overdue, lost or damaged materials, interlibrary loan postage and printing;
  • Answers informational and directional questions in person and on the telephone, and directs reference questions to the appropriate library personnel;
  • Assists patrons in circulation related services, such as interlibrary loan requests, reserve books, filling out Library applications, photocopying and faxing;
  • Handles and responds to patron concerns relative to circulation activities;
  • Maintains monthly circulation statistics and reports to Assistant Director;
  • Examines books and materials for damage and assists the Library Generalists to assess damages, make minor repairs, and clean items;
  • Prepares overdue material reports and mailings, which includes contacting other libraries if the patron is a TexShare patron;
  • Performs a variety of other office management functions;
  • Prepares mailings for interlibrary loan material,
  • Assists in sorting and shelving returned and new books and library materials as needed;
  • Covers Library service desks as needed;
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus one (1) year of experience working or volunteering in a public or school Library; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge: library operations; the Dewey Decimal System and personnel policies and procedures.

Skill/Ability:
deliver quality customer service; motivate, supervise and train employees; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; use discretion in communications that contain confidential/sensitive information; write and update procedures and training materials; work independently; handle complaints and criticism in a professional and efficient manner; demonstrate proficiency in Library-related software; accurately process materials and enter data into computer; pay great attention to detail; understand and follow instructions; operate and troubleshoot standard office equipment and computer software; perform simple mathematical calculations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
