The Appleton Public Library is looking for a Building Supervisor to join the team. The Library Building Supervisor oversees the library building including the safety and security of staff, patrons, and the library facility. This position is responsible for building oversight in coordination with other City departments as well as coordinating, planning, directing, and training all library staff in issues related to safety and security. Provides supervision to Operations staff and Security Monitors to ensure the protection of library patrons, staff, collections, moveable property, and facility. Maintains a relationship with law enforcement, library staff, and other city agencies. This position reports to the Assistant Director.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Oversees overall security operations and response to incidents occurring on library property;
  • Supervises Operations staff and oversees building, systems operations, and meeting room set up;
  • Assigns, coordinates, delegates, and supervises Library Security Monitors;
  • Coordinates projects with Facilities Management, vendors, and contractors with as little disruption to library operations as possible;
  • Oversees contracts specific to library operations and security;
  • Oversees restrictions of individuals based on the library's safety and security policy, using library security incident software. Works closely with Administration to ensure fast follow-through on restrictions;
  • Represents the library on appropriate committees and task forces proactively working with library staff and outside agencies, including the Central Safety Committee, law enforcement, and emergency responders, to anticipate, prevent, and respond to serious or emergency situations;
  • Develops training materials for staff and monitors on safety and emergency topics;
  • Recommends policies, develops procedures and services for daily operation and special events which maximize a safe and secure environment for people and library property;
  • Plans, oversees, and ensures delivery of security and safety related equipment and services;
  • Receives and responds as necessary to after-hours security alarms;
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the safety and security procedures and functions and makes changes as needed;
  • Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as required.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs essential job functions of Security Monitor as part of regular duties and as needed;
  • Oversees records retention for safety and security related incidents and documents;
  • Leads the library Safety Committee, including planning and overseeing security-related annual drills;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required. Minimum of three years of recent experience in criminal justice, security/law enforcement, and/or in providing direct service to at-risk, marginalized populations; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  • Knowledge of basic building systems, security systems, and general security practices.
  • Knowledge of policy and procedure development.
  • Knowledge of project and contract management.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite and security data.
  • Ability to train, supervise, schedule and review the work of staff and Library Security Monitors.
  • Ability to train staff on topics related to security and safety.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with others in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to deal effectively and compassionately with people in stressful situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, including agencies and community organizations.
  • Ability to function effectively in unpleasant, stressful, and/or hostile situations and environments, and to act appropriately in different situations.
  • Ability to work in both a team environment and independent of direct supervision, in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ability to plan and schedule work to meet time constraints and changing priorities.
  • Ability to identify and/or gather the information needed to generate an effective solution to an issue
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative in order to actively influence events, while exercising judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR & AED certifications within 6 months of hire.
  • CPI certified or equivalent crisis prevention and verbal de-escalation training.
