Position Title: Lecturer (Spanish Literature and Culture)

Department: Spanish Language and Transcultural Studies

Reports To: Department Chair

Location: On-campus (River Forest, IL)

Position Summary:

The Dominican University Department of Spanish Language and Transcultural Studies (SLTS) seeks applicants for a FT LECTURER in Spanish Literature and Culture beginning Fall 2025.

As a department within a diverse, Catholic HSI, we center access, belonging, and equity-minded perspectives. We are seeking an individual who can demonstrate effective engagement in an environment where colleagues and students come from many backgrounds and identities, as well as someone who can demonstrate commitment to equitable and inclusive teaching and research practices. A successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to inclusive and relationship-centered teaching and advising, which affirms the dignity of the human person and concern for the common good. The candidate must be willing to provide students with opportunities to participate in high impact practices. All faculty members are expected to participate in university life and governance from within the department and to continue professional development as mandated by the university and relevant to the field.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teaching 24 credit workload hours per academic year of Spanish language and literature/culture courses
  • Advising majors
  • Service to the department and continued professional development

Required Qualifications:
  • MA, PhD, or ABD in Spanish, or appropriate interdisciplinary PhD (Comparative Literature, Latine/Chicanx Studies, Gender & Sexuality Studies, etc.)
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English
  • Evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching
  • A commitment to working with first-generation, immigrant, and/or underrepresented/historically excluded students.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Generalists and scholars from any area of study will be considered; expertise in the following fields will be prioritized: Transcultural, Transatlantic, Border, Latine/Chicanx Studies in Spanish.
  • Completed PhDs and/or ABDs.
  • Experience teaching heritage speakers of Spanish
  • Experience or interest in developing community-based collaborations
  • Interest in enhancing our Hispanic-Serving Identity

Physical Demands:
  • Ability to spend long durations of the workday sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times

Salary and FLSA Status
  • FLSA Status: Exempt, full-time
  • SALARY: $55,000 - $65,000 annually

Evaluation of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled, with preference given to applications received by January 6, 2025.

The position is renewable and reviewed annually for continuation. Additionally, it undergoes a review every four years by Faculty Appointments and every six years by the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and the Spanish Language and Transcultural Studies program to assess the ongoing need for the role. There is an opportunity to seek promotion to Senior Lecturer, and conversion to a tenure-track position is possible, though not guaranteed.
