JOB SUMMARY:

The Utah Hockey Club is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable writer and multimedia reporter to join our team. This role requires a deep understanding of hockey, exceptional writing skills, expertise in multi-platform reporting, and the ability to engage fans with unique and insightful storytelling. The ideal candidate has several years of experience reporting on competitive hockey and/or the NHL. This person will be responsible for creating compelling written content - including game recaps and player features - editorial pieces that capture the excitement and narrative of the entire franchise, and contributing to owned content efforts around franchise storytelling. They will also come up with timely story ideas to illustrate the culture and personality of Utah Hockey Club and their unique journey as the newest NHL franchise.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Game Coverage: Write timely, accurate, and engaging game previews, recaps, and analysis for all home and away games.
  • Player & Team Features: Produce in-depth articles and interviews that highlight players, coaches, and behind-the-scenes aspects of the team.
  • Editorial Content: Contribute to blogs, opinion pieces, and feature stories that provide context, insight, and commentary on team performance, updates and news about the overall franchise, league developments, and trends throughout the NHL.
  • Compelling Storytelling: Pitch ideas for exclusive feature story telling that highlights continued ongoing development of the franchise and brings fans "behind the scenes" of Utah Hockey Club.
  • Live Coverage Support: Assist with live game-day reporting, including social media updates, injury reports, and post-game analysis.
  • Content Collaboration: Work closely with the social media, video production, and marketing teams to create multi-platform content that engages the Utah Hockey Club fan base.
  • Adherence to Brand Guidelines: Ensure all written content aligns with the team's brand voice, editorial standards, and overall marketing strategy.
  • Interviewing & Research: Conduct interviews with players, coaches, team personnel and business executives; stay informed and lead out on reporting team news, league standings, and relevant developments.
  • Content Calendar: Contribute to the overall content strategy and editorial calendar to ensure consistent and complimentary high-quality news and storytelling throughout the season.
  • Web Publishing: Utilizing NHL CMS, publishing written content on Utah Hockey Club website and maintaining updated storylines.
  • Protect the reputation of the company

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field.
  • Required to have 5+ years of experience reporting and writing about collegiate or professional hockey and/or the NHL
  • Proven knowledge of hockey, including all NHL rules and terminology, and understanding of league rules and trends
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills
  • Experience with multimedia content creation, including video scripts or podcasts
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, has a consistent presence online and an engaged hockey following
  • Understands how to use photo editing tools. Previous Adobe suite experience preferred.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and produce accurate, engaging content in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fluent in AP Style or other editorial guidelines.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) and basic SEO best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for conducting interviews and interacting with team members.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends and travel as required during the season
  • Possessing a portfolio of published articles and numerous writing samples.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • This person must be able to communicate and express themselves both written and verbally.
  • This person must be able to observe, inspect, estimate and assess.
  • This person must be able to sit, stand, bend, walk, and climb stairs for long periods of time.
  • This person must be able to lift 20 lbs.
