The Department of Cultural Affairs oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies including management of the largest state sponsored museum system in the country. The Museum Resources Division is a centralized group of skilled museum professionals that provides services to the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors, New Mexico Museum of Art, Museum of International Folk Art, Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, and the New Mexico Historic Sites.
Why does the job exist?
This position designs, develops, and coordinates the installation of permanent and temporary exhibitions within several Department of Cultural Affairs museums and historic sites. The designer works closely with the museums' curatorial, collections and education staff to bring their collective vision for each exhibition to life.
How does it get done?
The exhibition designer is responsible for producing the three-dimensional design of an exhibit, including gallery layout, casework design, and object display. Additionally, the exhibition designer acts as production manager for each exhibit, coordinating internal staff and contractor efforts from ideation through fabrication and gallery installation.
Who are the customers?
This position provides design services for four state museums, multiple historic sites and other traveling outreach programs within the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and, by extension, the public that visits these exhibitions.
Ideal Candidate
1. Preferred education - Bachelors degree in exhibition design, interior design, art, or architecture
2. Preferred experience - 5 or more years experience designing and installing object-based public exhibitions for museums or other cultural institutions.
3. Preferred experience - Expertise with SketchUp Pro, Adobe Creative Cloud, and AutoCAD software to create exhibition models, renderings of proposed interiors, and dimensioned construction drawings.
4. Preferred experience - Familiarity with macOS and Microsoft Office 365 for project coordination and management
5. Must possess strong communication, organization and project management skills. Must have ability to multi-task, to manage dynamics of diverse creative teams, and to navigate pressures of tight deadlines.
Minimum Qualification
Associates degree in Design, Architecture, Applied Arts, Fine Arts, or Graphic Design or related field and two (2) years of experience in exhibition design and/or fabrication. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education experience.
Employment Requirements
. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Mac computer workstation with Adobe Creative Cloud software and SketchUp used daily. Sitting, standing, and phone use in an office setting plus occasional work using tools, ladders, and/or lifts in Museum gallery setting. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
