LIBRARY ASSISTANT- Part Time

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class provides direct customer service in circulation, reader's advisory, technology training and other general library services. Work includes completion of various forms or reports, checking library materials in and out, assisting customers in locating library materials, typing, filing, issuing library cards, collecting fines, shelving books, facilitating resource sharing and assisting customers in the use of computerized catalogues, audio-visual equipment, the Internet, and other technology. Work requires significant public contact in a public building. Work is performed in an inside environment generally, but may provide assistance with programming outside. This job is under regular supervision and evaluated for customer service effectiveness and accuracy of work activities.

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Provide excellent customer service in a team-based environment including checking library materials and equipment in and out; emptying book drops; shelve library materials; create and maintain book displays
  • Prepares and processes books, periodicals, and audio-visual materials; mend damaged items as needed; apply bar codes, labels, and covers
  • Enroll new customers; issues cards; updates customer data base
  • Provide reader’s advisory, general information service and technology assistance to the public
  • Introduce, instruct, and assist customers in the use of the computerized catalogue and index, library and Internet-related databases
  • Teach e-reader, or other personal device skills to patrons in a one-on-one environment
  • Direct customers to various parts of the library; assists customers with disabilities
  • Assess and accept fines and fees; handle money and make change
  • Interpret and carry out behavior, donation, child safety and Internet user policies;
  • Inform customers about checking books in and out, overdue charges and waivers, customer registration, loan periods and renewals, reserving books and materials, and lost book procedures
  • Inputs, locates, and updates information on personal computer; generates, distributes, and interprets computer reports; compiles data
  • Process resource sharing including: sorting, packing and mailing library materials to various libraries throughout North Carolina
  • Answer telephone and provides information; transfers calls or takes messages; calls customers when reserve materials are ready
  • Assist in preparing and presenting children’s, teens, and outreach programming, as well as adult programming

Additional Job Duties

  • May arrange art or other displays
  • Perform related tasks as required

Hours

  • Some evening and Saturday work is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Working knowledge of library procedures, methods, materials and practices
    • Read English and sort in alphanumeric order
    • Learn the Dewey Decimal System
    • Work independently and take initiative in completing work assignments
    • Use interpersonal skills, common courtesy and tact when dealing with staff members and the public
    • Work accurately and efficiently
    • Manages time to maximize productivity
    • Working knowledge of library collections, reader’s advisory, library circulation procedures and research skills
    • Ability to use technology in a variety of forms
    • Working knowledge of business math, and the use of business machines
    • Ability to manipulate loaded book cart weighing 100 pounds over carpeted floors
    • Some knowledge of the theory and objectives of a public library system
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, and the public
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a high functioning team environment
    • Ability to learn library databases and be able to train the public in their use
    • Ability to type accurately at a reasonable rate of speed
    • Knowledge of safety procedures and policies
    • Ability to handle emergency situations
    • Valid NC driver’s license

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, fingering, talking, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to push/pull 100 pounds carts and lift boxes weighing up to 25 pounds. Must be able to carry 20 pounds up two flights of stairs.

Must possess the visual acuity to maintain records, read book spines, count monies, and operate a computer.

Work is performed primarily indoors though some programming is held off site. Almost all tasks involve continuous standing. May encounter situations that involve behavioral issues. Varied work hours, including weekends and evenings, which may change periodically.

Desirable Training and Experience

Graduation from high school required with preference given to candidates with a Bachelor’s degree; at least one year of library experience is preferred.

Other Requirements

Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
