As a Library Assistant I (LAI) you will support the Manager to serve the needs of a diverse community and provide superior customer service to patrons and coworkers.

Every day you will interact with patrons in varying ways. This will require professionalism, patience, and a solid understanding of JDL policies and procedures. A successful Library Assistant I (LAI) will have strong technology skills as well as an enthusiasm for serving the community.

In conversations with patrons and coworkers the Library Assistant I (LAI) is expected to be JDL's biggest advocate. We are seeking someone that uses customer service talents to build relationships with patrons and the community. Someone that has taken the initiative, and used good time management skills to support their coworkers. Someone with problem solving aptitudes and the ability to take direction and lead with optimism.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: LIBRARY ASSISTANT I

Reports to: Branch Manager or Department Coordinator

Status: Full or Part time /non-exempt

Nature of work

Under the direction of the Branch Manager or Department Coordinator, assists patrons in a various aspects of library use both in person and virtually, works on special departmental or branch projects as assigned and performs a variety of clerical services to assist in the efficient and effective operation of the Library.

Examples of work

Assists patrons in various aspects of library use both in person and virtually
  • Checks materials in and out
  • Exhibits knowledge of basic computer software and library database
  • Assists patrons in and placing patron requests for library materials
  • Issues library cards
  • Models positive customer service attitude
Works on departmental and branch projects as assigned by management or as temporary work loads dictate
  • Plans, presents, and assists with all JDL programming
  • Performs clerical and support functions within the department
Performs a variety of services to assist in the efficient and effective operation of the Library
  • Makes recommendations regarding collection maintenance
  • Knows and follows library procedures and polices
  • Keeps library materials organized, shelved, and neatly arranged
  • Reads shelves and conducts inventories
  • Performs specific ongoing tasks such as basic housekeeping and grounds keeping functions, mailroom duties, drop box duties, materials rotations, creating/designing displays, etc.

Employment Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or (GED) plus some college course work
  • 1 year of similar job experience (customer service)
  • 1 year business/office experience
  • Basic computer knowledge


Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, sit, bend, twist, stoop, reach and grasp, walk, push, pull or lift materials or equipment weighing 15 pounds or more, manually manipulate computer keyboard, mouse and scanner etc.

Additional Requirements

Ability to read and write, type and operate standard computer software, perform basic mathematical computations, communicate effectively, work a determined schedule including evenings and weekends, take and follow direction, work well with patrons, coworkers and management, organize work successfully, maintain confidentiality, give attention to detail, maintain, a positive customer service attitude (internal and external), meet deadlines, work independently and perform, multiple tasks simultaneously.
