Do you LOVE getting kids excited about reading? Can you match the right book with its reader? Can you be silly and serious (at the same time...)? Are you kid-friendly, community-minded, and creative? Then come work in Youth Services! Provide patron assistance at the Children's Desk and in the Children's Area and monitor all activity in the Children's Area.

Applicants with coursework in library studies, education, and/or child development preferred.

Hours of work: Hours worked typically include 1-2 nights per week, 1-2 Saturdays per month, and 2 Sundays per month. Must be available to start shift no later than 1:30 p.m. at least one day during the week.

Tentative start date in late February.
Essential Job Functions

  • Assists patrons at the Children's Desk with a variety of informational and technical needs.
  • Performs reader's advisory and ready reference.
  • Assists patrons with the operation of self-checks, game and Internet computer stations.
  • Assists with projects related to collection development.
  • Creates and maintains displays to promote library materials, on a continual basis.
  • Creates and maintains passive program materials.
  • Provides direction and guidance to library volunteers.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of library records.
Requirements of Work

High school diploma or GED plus one additional year of relevant education or training; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability, and skills.

Knowledge of
  • Requires knowledge and ability to sort efficiently in alphabetic or numeric order.
  • Requires working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
Ability to
  • Ability to understand and perform routine library procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public in person and on the telephone and maintain effective public relations.
  • Ability to operate library equipment properly, including LinkCat.
  • Ability to work flexible work hours with frequent evening and weekend hours.
  • Ability to maintain skills in above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate library skills learning experiences.
Skill in
  • Requires keyboarding, filing, and office programming ability, including word processing and spreadsheets.

  • Work is performed mostly in a Library setting; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or to stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and pushing and pulling objects on wheels weighing 60-80 pounds

PERSONAL HOLIDAYS - Prorated

Part-time employees working 10-20 hours/week at the Library (Floaters are not eligible) earn eight personal hours annually for use any time during the year with supervisor approval. These hours will be prorated for new hires in their first year (8 hours if hired between Jan-June; 4 hours July-Oct; and 0 hours if hired after Oct 1).
