Suburban General Assignment Reporter, Inquirer Local

The Philadelphia Inquirer is hiring a general assignment reporter to cover the suburbs and play a central role in a new Inquirer suburban coverage initiative. We're looking for a well-rounded reporter who excels at breaking news and enterprise reporting, and is committed to understanding and responding to community news and information needs.

You'll cover suburban stories across the region, with a special focus for now on the communities of Lower Merion and Cherry Hill. We want applicants who excel at sourcing, are equally nimble writing news and features, and are open-minded about new story forms and aggregation.

The Suburban GA reporter will be a member of the newsroom Now team, which covers breaking and trending news across the region. You'll also work with a cross-functional team developing new content and new products for suburban communities. This position is based in Greater Philadelphia, but many shifts will be able to be worked either from home or the field. This reporter may live anywhere in the Philly region.

About Us

Since 1829, The Philadelphia Inquirer has been "asking on behalf of the people" of Philadelphia and the region by providing essential journalism. Locally owned and headquartered in Center City Philadelphia, The Inquirer is a for-profit public benefit corporation under the non-profit Lenfest Institute. Its multiple brand platforms - including newspapers, Inquirer.com, e-Editions, apps, newsletters, podcasts, and live events - provide Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism to a growing audience that includes more than 156,000 digital subscribers and 20 million monthly impressions.

What You'll Do:
  • Report on breaking news across the suburbs, collaborating with other reporters when needed.
  • Develop a network of sources in Lower Merion and Cherry Hill, and routinely cover news and features out of those communities.
  • Work with a cross-functional team developing experimental hyperlocal news products and services.
  • Identify what suburban residents are talking about across social media platforms and bring those conversations to our readers.
  • Aggregate news stories that affect the suburbs, with an eye on how to move that story forward.
  • Contribute to live coverage during breaking news and major events and help pioneer new ways of bringing those moments to our audience.
Who We're Looking For:
  • Early and mid-career reporters with the ability to cover a range of topics and generate creative story ideas.
  • A reporter who values and is committed to community coverage, and engages in dialogue with local readers to understand and meet their needs.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm for on-the-ground reporting. We're seeking candidates who want to get out there.
  • You must have a driver's license and the willingness to travel across the region by car.
  • Familiarity with Philadelphia's suburbs is preferred, but not a prerequisite.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is committed to attracting a diverse group of people to join our team. As part of our mission, we are seeking candidates who share our passion for indispensable journalism and our drive to create a sustainable business model to support it.

We value diverse levels of experience, abilities, and backgrounds. Because of this, we encourage you to apply, even if you do not meet all of the requirements listed in the job description. The Inquirer may consider an equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, and experience to meet the minimum qualifications for this position.

The Inquirer is building an inclusive and equitable workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We especially encourage people from marginalized and underrepresented backgrounds to apply for vacant positions at all levels of the organization, including but not limited to people of color, women, people who identify as LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities. We are an equal opportunity employer for all regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, veteran status, and any other category protected by federal, state and/or local law.
