Duties and Responsibilities

PURPOSE: The ideal candidate demonstrates an ability to teach music (vocal, choral) and develop programs to enhance the music concentration experience through excellent teaching and creative curriculum development.

Teaching Duties Include:

  1. General music courses and applied music
  2. Vocal literature and diction repertoire (Italian, German, French, Spanish)
  3. Solfeggio, African American, and diasporic music and traditions
  4. Classical and contemporary music, choral, university choir, vocal, chamber music, and other genres

The candidate may serve as the Assistant Choir Director of the University Choir, conducting rehearsals, concerts, and overseeing the maintenance of the choral music library and uniforms. Other duties include maintaining regular office hours and possibly co-conducting the University Choir or teaching private voice lessons.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

In addition to teaching music courses, advising, and service, duties include:

  1. Aiding students in selecting and learning music material from various vocal repertoire eras
  2. Directing Vocal Ensembles
  3. Teaching Choral Conducting, Sight Singing, Ear Training, and Vocal Performance
  4. Service on co-curricular audition panels, juries, and recital committees

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Equivalent of a four-year degree; D.Mus.A., Ph.D., or Ed.D. preferred or M.M. in Voice or Choral Music (or related) required.

Experience: Minimum three (3) years of successful undergraduate teaching experience preferred. High School teaching experience will also be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Evidence of mentoring and nurturing pre-professional singers
  2. Applied knowledge of current literature and contemporary research in vocal pedagogy
  3. Experience teaching pre-professional singers in various musical styles
  4. Commitment to performing and teaching music by women, African American, and other historically excluded groups
  5. Experience in arts entrepreneurship and creating performance opportunities

Conditions of Employment

COVID-19 vaccinations are required for faculty and staff to be employed at Bowie State University.

Compensation: This is an adjunct position compensated based on credit hours:

  1. 1 credit hour – $1,000 per course
  2. 2 credit hours – $2,000 per course
  3. 3 credit hours – $3,000 per course

The candidate can earn up to $9,000 (equivalent to 9 credit hours) per semester.
