Job Description

The Pittsburg State University Department of Communication is accepting applications for an Assistant Instructional Professor of Communication.

Teach 12 credits per semester in communication education, human communication, and core curriculum. Oversee the communication education program and teach courses such as forensics practices, debate theory, oral interpretation of literature, and field experience. In human communication and core curriculum, teach small group communication, gender communication, interpersonal communication, and introduction to persuasive communication, both face-to-face and online. Qualified candidates may direct theatre productions and teach theatre courses, while for those with a Ph.D. or Ed.D., there are opportunities to teach at the graduate level and develop integrated work with other department emphases while promoting a strong collegial and student-centered atmosphere. Provide service to the university, community, and profession.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates teaching competence in a chosen content area and guides and inspires students.
  • Prepares and uses instructional media.
  • Experiments with instructional methods and techniques.
  • Can demonstrate an impact on students, both objectively and subjectively.
  • Participates in the academic governance of the academic unit to which assigned.
  • Seeks opportunities to interact with colleagues in order to improve instruction.
  • Is available to the academic community to consult with students concerning learning difficulties and colleagues concerning academic program issues.
  • Periodically reviews and revises course materials including textbooks, syllabi, evaluation instruments and instructional media.
  • Provides students with objectives relevant to the course taught, appropriate references, information as to the topics to be covered, and criteria for at least satisfactory performance.
  • Provides for student evaluation of the course and the instructor and uses the results of such evaluation to revise course and methods of instruction.
  • Makes available opportunities for students to learn of the primary sources of information associated with a particular discipline or area of study.
  • Observes academic regulations as legislated by the Faculty Senate and instructional "good practices," as recognized by the profession.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Required Education and Experience -
  • M.A. in communication or related field.

Preferred Education and Experience -

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in communication or related field
  • Teaching experience in communication education
  • Teaching experience in human communication
  • Experience teaching or directing in theater.


Job Type: Unclassified, Faculty, Non-Tenure Earning, Renewable Annually

Appointment Length: 9-month academic year with renewal based upon performance

Salary: $45,000
