Growth opportunities up to $25.00/hour


This position offers 40 hours of paid time off per calendar year


The Troy Public Library is the hub of the vibrant, dynamic, and diverse City of Troy. The Library sees over 700,000 visitors per year and serves an educated and involved community. Under the direction of the Head of Youth Services, this position will allow the student to gain practical library knowledge and skills, while working alongside professional librarians and staff.


DUTIES

  • Provide reference and readers' advisory to children and their families.
  • Assist patrons with library technology.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of programming for children and their families.
  • Engage in outreach opportunities within the community.
  • Assist with collection management as needed.
  • Work positively and collaboratively with other library staff.
  • Perform related duties and general library work as required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Enrollment in a Master degree program in Library and/or Information Science with at least 12 credits completed or equivalent experience
  • Interest in and dedication to providing excellent library service to a widely diverse community.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and sound independent judgement.
  • Working knowledge of common computer applications, including Microsoft office.
  • Discretion and consideration for patron privacy.
  • Written and verbal communication skills consistent with graduate-level work.
  • Punctuality and dependability.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt and respond to multiple priorities, interruptions and demands, and resolve problem situations in a positive manner.
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public, library staff, library volunteers, and other City departments.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards). Out of state applicants must provide current driving record at time of application and obtain State of Michigan license within one (1) month of appointment.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen (including marijuana).

PREFERENCES

  • Coursework related to youth/public library services.
  • Advanced research skills.
  • Technology skills specific to mobile devices and apps.
  • Public library experience, either as an advanced user or library employee at any level.
  • Knowledge of children's literature.

HOURS

  • Part-time; internship term length of up to 2 years or until the end of graduation month, whichever comes first.
  • Average of twenty (20) hours per week; Schedule will be varied to include day, evening, and weekend (Saturday and Sunday) shifts
