Reports to: Principal
Employment Type: Part Time, 6-9 hours per week
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Salary Range: $22.00 - 28.00 per hour commensurate with experience
The teaching of music in a Catholic school is considered a ministry, immersed in the culture of the Catholic school while enhancing the mission of the school. The music teacher services the school in an instructional capacity and performs the specific duties assigned by the principal of the school for grades K - 2.
Teaching Responsibilities:
Teaches the elements of music via the content standards as set forth by the California State Standards including the following elements:
Understanding the basic elements of music
- Students learn about the basic elements of music, such as pitch, rhythm, tempo, and dynamics
- Students learn to read and write notation
- Students learn to sing and play instruments
Making connections to music
- Students make personal connections to music in their daily lives
- Students learn about the value of music in different cultures
- Students learn to describe music from different cultures using their own vocabulary
Exploring different cultures
- Students learn about the role of music in different cultures throughout history
- Students learn to sing and play simple songs from different cultures
- Students learn to respond to music from different cultures using developmentally appropriate movements
Administrative/ Other Responsibilities:
- Leads weekly choir rehearsals (45 minutes)
- Attends monthly Sunday academy Mass and monthly school weekday academy Mass to direct choir (arrive early to assist with set up and stay late for cleanup) *pianist can be made available depending on need
- Communicates effectively with students, parents, and administration.
- Practices effective classroom management and works well in a team environment.
- Creates basic lesson plans / plans songs for upcoming Masses with church music minister
- Other duties as assigned by principal
- Return voice-mail/e-mail messages in a timely manner
- Communicate regularly with parents
- Maintain a neat and orderly classroom
- Demonstrate a respectful demeanor with staff, students, and parents
- Observe utmost confidentiality regarding parent, student, staff information/conversations
- Supervise playground and other areas of duty as the role may require
- Other duties as assigned
Professional Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree (preferred)
- Successful experience in student teaching or classroom teaching
- A basic understanding and acceptance of Catholic School philosophy, goals and objectives
- Understanding of child development and skills necessary to relate to the students
- Appropriate control and discipline techniques, which will enhance the learning environment
- Active, practicing, Roman Catholic with extensive knowledge and adherence to Church teaching and life (preferred)
Physical Requirements:
To successfully meet the needs of the students in his/her care, the teacher must:
- Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom. While standing the teacher will frequently hold objects they are working with or demonstrating
- Sit on an occasional basis
- Walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks. Walk on both even and uneven surfaces
- Deal with students while kneeling or squatting, stooping, or bending
- Reach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity; may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at the class
- Assist in moving children's desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom to influence the learning situation. It is occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds from the office to classrooms
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to be inside the classroom. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the classroom and preschool environment, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility to attend meetings, trainings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend trainings or workshops.
