Job Description
THE ROLE
As the Lead Middle School Communications/Writing Teacher for Grades 5-6 at Ethos Classical, you will inspire scholars to become exceptional communicators and critical thinkers. In this full-time position, you will teach foundational and advanced writing skills while fostering an understanding of media literacy, storytelling, and journalistic principles. You will guide scholars in developing their voices through creative and expository writing, collaborative projects, and school news initiatives. By expanding a dynamic and engaging curriculum, you will empower scholars to express themselves effectively and responsibly while contributing to Ethos Classicals culture of academic excellence and innovation.
THE PERSON
As the Lead Middle School Communications/Writing Teacher, you will:
- Teach Core Writing and Communication Skills:
Deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in writing, emphasizing narrative, expository, and persuasive techniques, as well as grammar and style. - Develop Media Literacy and News Skills:
Introduce scholars to journalism and media concepts, teaching them to analyze, evaluate, and create news stories. Guide them in producing school news content, including articles, broadcasts, or digital projects. - Foster Critical Thinking:
Encourage scholars to engage with current events, debate ideas, and develop informed opinions. - Create a Dynamic Curriculum:
Design lessons and activities that inspire creativity and deepen scholars understanding of communication in todays world, integrating technology and interdisciplinary approaches where appropriate. - Monitor Scholar Progress:
Use formative assessments and writing portfolios to track scholar growth, providing constructive feedback that supports improvement and builds confidence. - Build Positive Relationships:
Foster strong connections with scholars and families, maintaining open communication to support individual scholar needs and celebrate achievements. - Promote Collaboration and Leadership:
Mentor scholars in teamwork and leadership skills through group writing projects, peer editing, and public speaking opportunities. - Support a Culture of Excellence:
Model and maintain high expectations for scholar engagement, achievement, and behavior. - Engage in Professional Growth:
Participate in ongoing professional development to refine teaching practices and stay current with trends in writing instruction and media education.
THE MUST HAVES
Prior Experience:
- Bachelors degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or Education (Masters degree or related certification preferred).
- At least 3 years of teaching experience, preferably in middle school writing or communications.
- Proven expertise in teaching writing and media literacy, including experience guiding scholars through creative and journalistic projects.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a passion for inspiring young writers and critical thinkers.
Work Demands:
- Schedule: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
