The expected salary range for this role on hire is $29.09 to $36.64/hourly.

This position will provide library services by helping customers locate information and information resources by leading, retrieving, and delivering information resource materials.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Promotes and supports MCPL’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion values with staff and customers.
  2. Connecting Children and people with disabilities with materials and resources both in-person and over the telephone.
  3. Assist with programming, including staff-led and partner-led events.
  4. Assist with collection maintenance, including shelving and processing of library materials.
  5. Using new technologies and platforms.
  6. Attends meetings and workshops for professional development.
  7. Stays abreast of changes in MCPL policies and procedures, and technologies used by MCPL.
  8. May be assigned to the joint information/circulation service desk, or the circulation desk.
  9. Prepares library exhibits and displays; identifies items of high potential demand or widespread interest.

Employees in this position must complete LATI, the state’s Library Associates Training Institute, as scheduled, or complete at least 6 hours of coursework in an MLS program accredited by the American Library Association.

Work Schedule:

  • Library hours of operation are 7 days a week including evenings, days, and weekends.
  • Employees are expected to be available for work during these times.
  • Individual schedules, including evenings and weekends, will vary based on branch operational needs.

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree, supplemented by training or formal academic coursework.

Experience: None

Equivalency: None

Note: An appointee with only a bachelor’s degree shall have two (2) years from date of appointment to complete a minimum of ninety (90) hours of in-service training by attending the Maryland State Library Associate Training Program under Departmental sponsorship; or, complete nine (9) hours of formal course work in library science for compliance with the Maryland State Board of Education Bylaw for Public Library Associates.

Physical Ability: Ability to perform light physical effort, such as keyboarding, standing, or staying in place for long periods of time and lifting, carrying and/or moving of book tubs, carts and library books and materials weighing 20 pounds, regularly, and up to 50 pounds, as required.


Continuing Education: Employees will be responsible for maintaining appropriate level of Continuing Education to meet State requirements.

All Applicants will be reviewed by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated “Qualified,” placed on the Referred List, and may be considered for an interview. Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are the same grade or higher will be placed on the Referred List as a “Transfer” candidate and may be considered for an interview.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:

  1. Experience providing direct customer service to Children.
  2. Experience in locating information and materials through general reference, electronic and readers’ advisory services.
  3. Experience or familiarity using Public Access Catalogs and electronic online databases to locate material, place holds, and search indices.
  4. Experience educating and informing groups and/or conducting programs for Children.
  5. Experience with technology such as software, digital signage, e-readers, iPads, hotspots, Smart TVs, and other equipment to support customer service needs.
