Subject Matter Experts are needed to write and review assessment items according to provided guidelines and documentation. All assessment items are aligned to evidence statements. SMEs are responsible for content accuracy and will work with a learning designer who will review all items. SMEs will be required to write assessment items that are multiple choice questions. This includes answers and feedback/rationale. SMEs are responsible for 2 rounds of edits.

Course Description:

The Secondary Biology course offers a comprehensive understanding of biological principles and processes, starting from the fundamental cellular structures and functions to the complexities of ecosystem dynamics. Students will delve into key topics such as genetics, evolution, and ecological interactions, gaining insights into the diversity of life and the interconnectedness of biological systems. The course emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enabling learners to analyze biological phenomena and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, students will engage in hands-on activities, scenarios, and case studies to deepen their understanding. Additionally, the course highlights the impact of environmental changes on ecosystems, fostering an appreciation for conservation and sustainability. By the end of the course, learners will be well-prepared to address various biological challenges and pursue further studies or careers in the field of biology education.

In-depth knowledge of the content areas covered within the course including:

  • How to research and evaluate biology curricular resources
  • Nature and Impact of Science and Engineering
  • Cell Biology: Cell Structure and Function
  • Genetics and Evolution
  • Diversity of Life and Organismal Biology
  • Ecology: Organisms and Environments
  • Finding, reading, and understanding state content standards and competencies

Required Availability:

  • You must be immediately available for at least 20 hours/week (this will vary depending on the amount of questions).
  • You must be available to complete the work in 2-4 weeks and adhere to strict deadlines.

Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in subject matter
  • Post-Pandemic collegiate teaching experience
  • 2+ years assessment item development experience
  • 1+ years online assessment item development or review experience
  • Familiarity with Canvas learning management platform
  • Experience using Google Workspace
  • Experience with Quizlet, Kahoot, or comparable learning activities software
  • Strong academic writing ability
  • Ability to follow a provided style guide and comprehensive guideline instructions
  • Ability to work effectively in an agile environment with a multi-phased roadmap
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Native-level American English language skills
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Ability to expertly work cross-functionally in a remote environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in subject matter
  • Dual/concurrent career as educator and practitioner
  • Expertise in developing and evaluating curricula—including learning objectives, selecting content, and designing learning experiences that align with educational standards.
  • Experience with curriculum-based assessment and measurement
  • Use of various digital tools to facilitate instruction, communication, and assessment.
  • Accommodating diverse learning needs in different settings (in-person, hybrid and remote)
  • Ability to adapt assessment methods to different learning environments (in-person, hybrid and remote)
  • Experience serving on item review panels
  • Experience with bias and sensitivity reviews
  • Familiarity with Bloom's Taxonomy or Depth of Knowledge
