Job Description:
Milwaukee Tool's Industrial Design team is continuing to grow and is looking for a dynamic Industrial Designer to join its in-house Personal Protection Equipment design team, located in the Downtown Milwaukee Campus. Our product line is continually expanding; come join a growing creative team that is building a portfolio of advanced products.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Industrial design at Milwaukee Tool is chartered to create compelling solutions focused on solving critical user needs.
The primary duties of a Staff Industrial Designer center around developing new products. Every project entails an empathetic understanding of users and the inventive exploration of form and function, with consideration for the interactions between the user and the product or system.
Conceptual exploration is accomplished through competitive assessments, field visits to identify unmet user needs, design trend awareness, and purposeful ideation. The design intent is communicated through strong visual storytelling skills and study models to gain acceptance by the project team.
The conceptual direction is developed using a combination of 2D sketching, technical illustrations, renderings, 3D CAD, and appearance models. Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator is essential, particularly for creating conceptual layouts, patterns, and graphic designs. Experience in soft goods and tech pack development is highly valued. Design proposals are reviewed in a phase-gate process to obtain cross-functional consensus.
The designer will follow the solution through all pre-production stages, creating specifications for CFM requirements, product graphics. Maintaining close engagement with process partners to consider cost / schedule / performance trade-offs relating to construction, assembly and manufacturing.
Collaboration with cross-functional product management and engineering teams is critical to delivering exceptional designs based on uncovered objectives and design criteria. Designers are expected to work on-site, participate in project meetings and teleconferences, and lead design reviews with process partners and design peers.
QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with a major in industrial design.
- Looking for 3 to 5 years of professional experience designing in a product development environment. Preference for experience with consumer products or durable goods.
- Demonstration of professional demeanor through a portfolio of product design, design thinking and design strategic skills.
- Highly collaborative with analytical problem-solving ability.
- Proficient communication of process through visual thinking, storyboards, mock-ups, sketching, conceptual rendering, and CAD modeling.
- Well-versed in design thinking methodologies.
- Strong Adobe Illustrator skills in creating conceptual layouts, patterns, and graphic layouts.
- Experience with soft-good and tech-pack creation development is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Domestic and international travel as required.
