Description: Job Summary:

The Music Therapist (MT) is responsible for planning, organizing and providing music therapy experiences that are designed to meet patients physical or psychological needs, such as solo or group singing, music listening, instrument playing, and music writing. The MT provides treatment individually or in a group setting utilizing instrumental or vocal music and music therapy techniques such as guided imagery or progressive relaxation.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with members of the Interdisciplinary Team to identify patients who may be appropriate for music therapy and in planning music activities.
  • Performs patient assessments to evaluate appropriateness for a music therapy program and contributes to the plan of care.
  • Utilizes a variety of musical styles and techniques to meet the individual needs of each patient.
  • Facilitates instrumental and vocal activities individually or in appropriate group settings.
  • Reports changes in the patients conditions and needs to the RN Case Manager or Hospice Supervisor.
  • On an ongoing basis, evaluates the effectiveness of music therapy services with the patient and/or caregiver of patient.
  • Observes for safety hazards in the patients and organizations environments and takes the appropriate steps to reduce or eliminate them.
  • Participates in agency Memorial Services and other events as such, when appropriate.
  • Supports the bereavement program through participation, as needed, in ceremonies such as Veteran recognition, Memorial Services, etc.
  • Conducts home visits to provide music therapy to patients on hospice.
  • Provides education to staff, volunteers and community partners on music therapy programs.
  • Attends and participates in in-services, staff meetings and case conferences.
  • Maintains continuing education through academic studies, seminars and workshops.
  • Assists with the training of music therapy interns.
  • Completes all documentation in an accurate and legible manner and / or EMR.
  • Complies with hospice policies and procedures, laws and regulations and standards of practice.
  • Adheres to the highest standards of professional and personal conduct in the performance of his/her duties.

Education
  • Bachelors Degree in Music Therapy.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Driver's License (California)
  • Board of Music Therapists Certificate


Additional Requirements:
  • Knowledge about principles, theories and practices of Music Therapy.
  • Ability to sing and play a musical instrument and to assess musical and non-musical skills and abilities of individuals.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to serve patients and their families at the end of life.
  • Possess a compassionate attitude in caring for hospice patients and demonstrates positive communication skills in interacting with other members of the hospice team.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • One year experience working in a hospice, hospital or palliative care setting.
  • Experience training and mentoring Music Therapy interns.
