Job Description
The Dallas Morning News has an opening for an Audience Journalist. The Audience Journalist will be a key member of the team responsible for deepening the relationship we have with the community, as well as maintaining the overall presentation and promotion of journalismdallasnews.com content on our platforms and beyond.
We're looking for an ambitious digital editor to help us determine the best ways to promote our journalism: how, where, when and in what formats.
The Audience Team is on the front lines of building trust with our readers and connecting those readers with the journalism that is urgent, revelatory, aggressive and inspiring – and that matters to them. We're passionate about identifying audiences we're not reaching yet and involving them in our reporting process. We don't want to just cover stories about underserved communities; we want to cover stories for them.
We're looking for strong digital storytellers who are eager to experiment with new formats to help connect our journalism with the right readers. If you thrive in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, love immersing yourself in internet culture, and enjoy keeping ahead of the latest developments in social and digital spaces, you'll excel in this role.
Ideal candidates will have strong headline, writing and editing skills, including the versatility to shift voice and tone based on the potential audience. They will be able to work on tight deadlines and in a fast-moving environment. They will have keen news judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Duties could include:
- Creating engaging social media posts
- Managing the dallasnews.com home page
- Monitoring analytics and making decisions based on that information
- Improving and testing headlines
- Optimizing story pages
- Pushing news alerts to our readers
- Aggregating and posting wire content
- Collaborating with writers and editors on plans for content promotion
Job Requirements
Here’s our list of preferred skills and experience (Please note this is not a checklist of requirements, but should be considered as a pool of preferred qualifications. If you can already do some of these things, great. If you're excited about figuring out how to do all of them, great! We'd love to hear from you either way.)
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- At least one professional internship, preferably in a newsroom
- Strong news judgment and communication skills
- Experience using audience data to make informed decisions
- Experience working in content management systems
- Strong headline writing skills and an understanding of SEO best practices
- Experience with A/B testing a plus
- A nuanced understanding of social media best practices and newsletter growth strategies
- Solid understanding of internet culture and the digital space
- Prior reporting and editing experience a plus
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, data-driven environment
- Strong drive for innovation and experimentation
- Understanding of basic copyright law (or willingness to learn), and ability to adapt as laws evolve
- Familiarity with analyses of our audiences, digital and print
