Overview

Advanced Technologies & Lab International, Inc. (ATL) is hiring for services in support of our partnership with Salado Isolation Mining Contractors SIMCO Central Characterization Program (CCP). ATL will perform safe and compliant waste characterization and certification activities at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The purpose of the waste characterization is to confirm the Acceptable Knowledge (AK) of national defense-generated Contact-Handled (CH) Transuranic (TRU), and CH Mixed TRU Waste. TRU waste visual exam operators play a critical role in ensuring the safe handling and disposal of radioactive waste and must follow strict safety protocols to protect themselves and others from exposure to radiation.

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities

This position is for a Visual Examination Operator who will be responsible for obtaining and maintaining qualifications as CCP VEO1 – VEO2. Shift: 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM

  • Performs high-quality visual examination of all waste slated for transport to the WIPP facility following the conduct of operations policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in all aspects of Visual Waste Characterization (TRU mixed waste), applicable Acceptable Knowledge, Data Quality Objectives, and all associated documentation.
  • Completes and reviews TRU waste examination documentation with 100% accuracy.
  • Adheres to strict compliance with documented procedures, including meeting operational and procedural training requirements to remain qualified.
  • Demonstrates effective teamwork with peers, supervisors, managers, clients, service organizations, and external entities, including providing sound judgment and issue resolution in both business and technical areas.
  • Wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), handles radioactive waste and must follow strict safety protocols to protect themselves and others from exposure to radiation.
  • Uses specialized equipment, such as radiation detectors and leak testers, to identify potential hazards or defects.

Minimum Requirements

  • Active DOE Q clearance.
  • High School Diploma or GED with two (2) years of experience.
  • One (1) year of experience at a DOE Nuclear Facility and with waste management or similar hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of LLNL site and facility security requirements, a plus.
  • Experience working in radiological laboratories and facilities, a plus.
  • Proven computer skills and experience.
  • Ability to use specialized equipment, such as radiation detectors and leak testers, to identify potential hazards or defects.
  • Ability to follow established procedures for handling and inspecting TRU waste.
  • Ability to follow site and facility security requirements.
  • Adherence to safety requirements and promotion of a safe workplace.
  • Ability to input critical data into computer systems.
  • Flexibility to take on a variety of duties and assignments as requested or assigned.
  • Ability to perform duties while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, respirators, dosimeter/radiation badges.

Desired Qualifications

  • Active DOE Q clearance.
  • Current Human Reliability Program (HRP), or current enrollment in HRP in support of Visual Examination packaging operations under the CCP certified program including data generation level review of TRU Waste.
