Minimum Qualifications

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some graduate-level studies.
  • Electronic editing experience with MS Word.
  • Experience editing book-length manuscripts.
  • Experience working with XML.
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in humanities/liberal arts or social sciences.
  • One-year full-time experience with a book or scholarly journal publisher or equivalent freelance editorial experience with book publishers.

Position Summary

The University of Georgia Press seeks an experienced professional to work with its Editorial, Production, and Design staff. Acting as a liaison with authors, freelancers, and press colleagues, the production editor oversees 20-30 projects per year from manuscript to bound book, especially as such work is related to copyediting, proofreading, and general project organization.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Prepares manuscripts and disks for freelance copyeditors, ensuring house style and guidelines are followed.
  • Ensures that page make-up and house style guidelines are followed by proofreading and checking accuracy of proof corrections.
  • Edit indexes, marketing copy, and occasional manuscripts, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Work closely with authors in the review of edited manuscripts and proof.
  • Manage design and production processes for book manufacturing.
  • Evaluate and organize illustrations and permissions.
  • Evaluate manuscript drafts for potential problems.
  • Coordinate and review the work performed by freelance copyeditors and proofreaders.
  • Prepare edited manuscripts for design and production.
  • Oversee departmental student interns.
  • Assume other duties related to press relations, publishing, and professional development as assigned.
