THE POSITION
The City of Santa Barbara Library Department is seeking a motivated Librarian I/II. This position performs a variety of professional library functions involved in assisting library patrons with their informational needs; plans and implements library programs; participates in the development of the library collection; and provides assistance, education and information to the public regarding library use and services. The specific role is for an Adult Programming Librarian.
Other duties may include supporting staff and patrons in using digital services and digital devices, including by developing and delivering training; cultivating, enhancing, and maintaining relevant community contacts; preparing statistical reports as required; planning and implementation of adult-focused programs and outreach, especially as related to arts and culture programming, books and literature programming, business-related programming, and Spanish-language programming; creating a sustainable growth strategy for assigned programs and services that ensures high quality, appeals to the Library's diverse community, and helps attract new customers; implementing effective data collection methods to assess measurable outcomes and impacts of programs and services; collaborating with all other Librarians to develop programming, services, and collections; creating print and digital marketing materials, contributing to social media, and conducting trainings for library users.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Provide exemplary customer service to all individuals by demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous and respectful, and to actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment.
- Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing assigned library services; implement policies and procedures.
- Assess and select various materials for introduction into the library material collection; evaluate materials for withdrawal.
- Participate in the acquisition of library materials; requisition supplies and materials; maintain related files; monitor material expenditures.
- Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; review with appropriate management staff; implement improvements.
- Develop, plan and administer programs and activities related to adult programming, including small group library and technology instruction classes, and educational and enrichment programming related to community needs and interests.
- Provide reference and readers’ advisory assistance to patrons of all ages, with a focus on adults, including those who speak Spanish.
- Coordinate activities with outside community groups and partner agencies. Develop and initiate new partnerships to increase the impact of Library services to the community.
- Interview and hire paraprofessional and clerical staff; conduct staff training, evaluate performance, supervise duties of professional, paraprofessional and clerical level library staff.
- Prepare various materials and documents including reports, brochures, manuals, and grant proposals.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Librarian I
$71,635.72 - $87,074.52 Annually
This is the entry-level class of the Librarian series. This class is distinguished from the Librarian II by the amount of technical knowledge and experience that is required and applied in the performance of duties including performing routine librarian activities. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
Librarian II
$78,756.60 - $95,728.88 Annually
This is the full journey level class within the Librarian series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Librarian I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, including the planning and development of library programs. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

- Knowledge of: principles and procedures of complex professional and technical library work including methods, practices and techniques of library classification, cataloging and referencing; computerized cataloging, bibliographical, acquisition and circulation system databases and maintenance; policies, procedures and functions of a library; accounting procedures and techniques; program development, promotion and implementation; best practices in equity, diversity, and inclusion in libraries; cultural humility and cultural competence.
- Ability to: perform professional and technical library tasks; verify bibliographic data and identify, input and/or correct diacrytics and special characters; assist library patrons in response to complex reference and directional library questions; operate computerized cataloging, bibliographical, acquisition and circulation data systems; work independently in the absence of supervision; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Experience:
Librarian I
Some professional library experience is highly desirable.
Librarian II
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible professional and technical library experience.
Education and/or Training:
Equivalent to a Masters degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in library science or a related field.
Availability to work some evening and weekend hours is required. The ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish is highly desired.
