Position Description:The Applied Health Sciences Librarian manages library collections and services that support the teaching, research, and public engagement work of the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Applied Health Sciences (AHS) through instruction, research consultation, and collection development. The Librarian offers instruction and consultation on the use of systematic review methods in the health and social sciences and serves as a Library expert on systematic reviews.

Within the unit, the AHS Librarian contributes to training and mentorship of Graduate Assistants and participates in Social Sciences, Health, and Education Library (SSHEL) information services.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of the Social Sciences, Health, and Education Library, the Applied Health Sciences Librarian will provide subject expertise for the interdisciplinary fields within the College of AHS, focusing on the learning, research, and collection needs of the students and faculty of the College.

Specific duties include:

  • Serve as liaison to the Departments of Speech & Hearing Science; Recreation, Sport & Tourism; Kinesiology and Community Health; the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences program; Chez Veterans Center; and the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (including coordination with the Library’s ADA Administrator), in the College of Applied Health Sciences;
  • Provide instruction for AHS departments through multiple modalities, including in-class and virtual presentations and asynchronously through tutorials or online guides;
  • Consult with faculty and students in AHS and social sciences disciplines on the development of systematic review projects;
  • Develop and manage the Library’s collection in relation to AHS disciplines in collaboration with AHS faculty;
  • Work with librarians in related subject areas to collaboratively develop and manage related collections materials;
  • Engage in collaborative projects with other Health Sciences liaisons to support Health and Medicine programs on the UIUC campus;
  • Provide in-person and virtual reference services for the Social Sciences, Health, and Education Library and the University Library Information Desk;
  • Participate in professional activities and monitor developments and best practices elsewhere to help ensure the excellence of Illinois' Applied Health Sciences collections and services;
  • Serve on Library and University committees, task forces, and working groups;
  • Conduct research in line with a well-articulated research agenda that builds knowledge in the candidate’s area of research and contributes to the national and international reputation of the University Library;
  • Participate in professional service and collaboration with appropriate colleagues and organizations;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Salary and Rank: The budgeted salary range for this open-rank faculty position is $65,000 to $75,000 and is commensurate with credentials and experience. The University of Illinois Library is committed to competitive salaries and attending to equity in compensation within the organization.

Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.

Requirements

Required:

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science or equivalent;
  • Familiarity with providing information, reference, and instructional services in an academic or research or medical setting;
  • Familiarity with online information resources, and information management tools for health or medicine;
  • Familiarity with developing online instruction activities and materials;
  • Demonstrated knowledge or understanding of all aspects of supporting the research process;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and to work collaboratively and effectively with others in a team environment;
  • Evidence of the ability to do research, publication, and service consonant with University standards for tenure and promotion;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing;
  • Demonstrated awareness of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility best practices.

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree in a health sciences discipline;
  • Demonstrated experience of at least 1 year working in a professional health science related library position;
  • Experience providing scholarly support services such as systematic review consultations;
  • Experience building and sustaining (health/medical) library collections in all formats;
  • Experience working with disability services or knowledge of modifying services and online materials to include universal design.
  • Evidence of flexibility and ability to thrive in a complex and fluid organizational environment;
  • Familiarity with the scholarly literature in other social science disciplines.
