The Clerk often serves as the first Library staff member encountered by patrons and as a result, greeting visitors/patrons is one of their responsibilities. The Clerk reports to and is supervised by the Library Director. This position requires evening and part-time Saturday shifts. The Library’s team of staff members is cross-trained to assist in relieving each other throughout the Library.
Duties include:
- Assists Library patrons in applying for Library memberships and processing those membership applications, in using the copier and fax machines, in responding to requests for information and assistance (and may refer inquiries to a professional librarian), and in reserving, charging, and discharging library books, materials, and equipment.
- Checks mailbox and puts all mail in top box on desk.
- Check book drop at beginning of each shift, sorting all materials from book drop and shelving all items during each shift, making sure to keep book shelves neat at all times.
- Check for holds on materials and ready for courier bag.
- Always check for phone messages and read emails each shift. Responding to general information requests made by telephone or in writing.
- Alerts Director to any issues/problems that may occur while clerk is working – including but not limited to – issues concerning patrons, and building and grounds maintenance.
- Is responsible for Summer Reading Program (SRP) discussing all elements of programming ideas and planned programming in advance of programs with Director.
- Alert Director to any items that are running low and need to be ordered/purchased (IE: receipt tape, printer ink, copier paper, etc.).
- Is responsible for seasonal decorating, maintaining community announcement board and supplies of pamphlets and brochures for patrons.
- Monitors patrons in the reading rooms and areas in accordance with the Patron Code of Conduct.
- Observes and maintains library hours at all times – never leaving building unattended.
- Other special duties may be assigned depending on skills and interest: social media content, assistance with Library fundraising events, etc.
Qualifications/Profile:
- The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a high school education. Experience in a library or educational setting preferred but not required.
- Candidates should be able to interpret a variety of instructions – whether written or oral and to acquire a working knowledge of regulations and Library procedures. Candidate should be able to apply those principles of the library technical system to solve practical problems and to respond to routine information requests.
- Candidates should be able to do mathematics (add, subtract, multiply and divide), to type accurately, to acquire the skills needed to operate data and word processing equipment, and to maintain accurate files and records.
Hours/Compensation/Benefits:
Regular work Schedule is seven hours per week, additional hours when filling in for Director or during Summer Reading Program or other programs as agreed upon and starting wage is at the current NYS minimum wage, $15.50 as of January 1, 2025.
