Position Overview
MLC is seeking a Youth Services Library Consultant to give advice, guidance, and training to public libraries about all aspects of library services provided to patrons under the age of eighteen based on state and federal laws, best practices, and emerging trends. This position is expected to work with libraries around the state to develop, plan, and implement programs and special projects that contribute to the development of public library services to youth. Training provided to libraries includes presenting workshops, trainings, and special events both in person and virtually. The position serves as the state representative for summer library programs, responsible for communicating, tracking, and reporting program activities within the state. Routine travel (both day and overnight trips) in an agency vehicle is required.
What You'll Need to be Successful
- Strong knowledge of children's and young adult literature, trends, and developmental stages.
- Interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and connect with youth, their families and caregivers, and public library professionals.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
- Creativity and enthusiasm for programs and activities that inspire a love of reading.
- Working knowledge of public libraries.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a Master's Degree and 0-2 years of experience. Agency preferred qualifications: Master's degree and 2-4 years of experience. Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited institution with coursework in youth services; experience working with youth in a library setting. Preference may be given to those with public library experience and public speaking experience.
