This position is responsible for providing excellent customer service to library patrons and internal customer service to city departments and other library sections. It is essential that the person in this position be an outstanding representative of the library’s mission and values. The person in this position must have a basic knowledge of the principles of reference and information services.
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
Responsibilities
- Staff library and community outreach service points, performing general library and other related tasks at each.
- Be approachable and available to patrons, with an investment in the positive outcome of each interaction.
- Develop and maintain a professional, welcoming rapport with all persons with the goal of furthering the library’s mission and values in the community.
- Perform user-focused service tasks involving: patron accounts, including materials requests, item check-outs and returns, processing new cards, and accepting payments for fines and fees; patron access of library collections and services, including assistance with handheld reading and other consumer devices; and patron referrals to appropriate library collections, services, and staff.
- Have an excellent working knowledge of a variety of library related technology with preparation to render assistance to patrons in that regard.
- Maintain, re-stock, and organize the areas staffed by the Customer Experience section, including routing returned materials to the appropriate locations.
- Collaborate in the development, implementation, and marketing of library programming, services, and collections.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications for Specialist I
- Must be available to work nights and weekends.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- One year of library experience preferred.
- Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City.
Minimum Qualifications for Specialist II
- Must be available to work nights and weekends.
- Library Support Staff Certification and three years of library experience – OR
- Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience – OR
- Five years of direct library experience.
- Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City.
Minimum Qualifications for Specialist III
- Must be available to work nights and weekends.
- Library Support Staff Certification and five years of library experience – OR
- Master’s Degree in Library Science and two years of experience – OR
- Ten years of direct library experience.
- Any combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, may be substituted or evaluated at the discretion of the City.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Cash-handling experience.
Knowledge of:
- Library staff roles and the library’s mission and role in the community.
- The ethics and values of libraries and the library profession, which includes knowledge of the Library Bill of Rights and the ALA code of Ethics.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of library records and information.
- The Dewey Decimal System.
- The Library's ILS, SirsiDynix Symphony WorkFlows.
- Springshare Cloud Software for Libraries.
- City/County library policies and procedures.
- Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of marketing practices.
Skill in:
- Using computers, e-readers, tablets, and other personal electronic devices.
- Self-motivated to initiate and execute various tasks and projects.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
Ability to:
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Work with limited supervision.
- Manage time effectively.
- Type 40 wpm.
Physical Demands

Individual must be able to push and pull fully loaded book carts and bins weighing up to 100 lbs. and lift at least 15 lbs. Tasks involve visual and audio awareness of surroundings, prolonged reaching, twisting, walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, sitting, climbing and lifting of at least ten pounds. Position will include extended periods of time at a workstation or keyboard.
