Job Summary:
The Children's Specialist creates a welcoming and engaging environment for young library users. This role involves developing and delivering exciting programs for children and young adults, managing the children's collection, and providing outstanding customer service. The Children's Specialist will collaborate with the Teen Coordinator to provide a cohesive youth services program.
Major Duties:
Program Development and Implementation
- Plan and conduct a variety of programs for children and young adults, such as:
- Story times
- Puppet shows
- Crafts
- Performances
- Summer reading activities
- Literacy workshops for parents and young readers
- Conduct programs and tours for schools, daycares, and community organizations.
- Develop and implement special reading incentive programs.
- Collaborate with the Teen Coordinator to maintain the Children's Department calendar.
- Contribute information about upcoming programs for marketing and scheduling.
Collection Management
- Select and maintain a diverse and engaging collection of children's and young adult materials.
- Keep the collection up-to-date on Lexile and Accelerated Reader scores.
- Plan and create monthly displays to promote library materials.
- Assist patrons with locating materials in the library and online.
- Provide exceptional customer service to library patrons of all ages.
- Assist patrons with:
- Checking materials in and out
- Paying fines
- Placing holds
- Obtaining library cards
- Using library computers and online resources
- Accessing reference materials and databases
- Requesting items from other libraries
- Provide reader's advisory services to children and young adults.
- Promote library programs and resources to the community.
Administrative Tasks
- Assist the Library Manager in developing policies and procedures for children's services.
- Attend staff meetings and regional training.
- Assist with voter registration.
- Search for missing items.
- Collect payment for lost or damaged materials.
- Sort and shelve materials.
- Perform technical services duties, such as data entry, processing new materials, and conducting inventory.
- Mend damaged materials.
- May open and close the library and work on Saturdays.
- Perform general clerical duties, such as typing, filing, and cleaning.
- May be asked to perform the Teen Coordinator's duties in their absence.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of individuals, including:
- Library patrons
- Co-workers
- School officials
- Business and civic representatives
- Performers
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of children's and young adult literature and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.
- Familiarity with library policies and procedures.
- Strong understanding of community resources and service agencies.
- Knowledge of the PINES (Public Information network for Electronic Services) of the Georgia Public Library Service.
- Skill in using online databases and search engines to conduct effective research.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace (Microsoft Office compatible) and social media platforms.
- Ability to plan and conduct engaging programs for youth.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and community partners.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Library Science, or a related field.
- One to three years of experience working with children in a library or educational setting.
- Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia.
Supervisory Controls:
The Library Manager provides general instructions and oversees work. Completed work is reviewed for accuracy, adherence to procedures, and overall quality.

Physical Demands
The work requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, and stooping. It also involves lifting library materials (including boxes of books weighing up to 25 pounds), climbing ladders, and using computers and other equipment.
The work is primarily performed in a library setting but may also involve working in schools and daycare centers.
